Surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) is used in a variety of different applications; however, the ozone generated in the discharge can be toxic to people in the vicinity. In this paper, we study the SDBD (using generators with smooth-edge, serrated and thin-wire high-voltage electrodes) in terms of ozone generation. The electrical measurements and the time-resolved plasma imaging revealed differences in the discharge current, dissipated power and plasma morphology for the different types of SDBD generators and showed significant suppression of the streamer formation from the thin-wire electrode. We determined the amount of ozone produced by each generator and found that despite the observed differences in discharge between the generators, the ozone production yield and the maximum volumetric concentration of ozone for all three generators is a linear function of only one parameter—the discharge active power. We also found that the ozone production efficiency of 9.66 g/kWh is constant for all three generators. Our results show that SDBD generators can be safely used in the enclosed space if the SDBD discharge operates with relatively low active power (the SDBD generator working with the active power of 1.7 W did not exceed the ozone concentration of 0.1 ppm in the 60 m3 room).

Ozone Generation by Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge

The application of DCSBD (Diffuse Coplanar Surface Barrier Discharge) plasma is referred to as the surface modification/activation of materials. The exposure of material surfaces to DCSBD plasma is initiated by changes in their chemical composition, surface wettability and roughness. The given study presents the mentioned plasma application in the context of the modification of the material viscoelastic properties, namely the PVC polymer film. The measurement of viscoelastic properties changes of PVC was primarily examined by a sensitive thermal method of dynamic-mechanical analysis. This analysis allows identifying changes in the glass transition temperature of PVC, before and after DCSBD plasma application, Tangens Delta, supported by glass transition temperatures of Elastic and Loss modulus. The results of the present study prove that DCSBD plasma applied on both sides to PVC surfaces causes changes in its viscoelastic properties. In addition, these changes are presented depending on the variability of the material position, with respect to the winding of the electrodes in the ceramic dielectric generating the DCSBD plasma during modification. The variability of the PVC position holds an important role, as it determines the proportion of filamentous and diffuse components of the plasma that will interact with the material surface during modification. The application of DCSBD plasma must, therefore, be considered a complex modification of the material, and as a result, non-surface changes must also be considered.

DMA Analysis of Plasma Modified PVC Films and the Nature of Initiated Surface Changes

Dermal wound infections are a rising source of morbidity and mortality in patients worldwide as new and worsening complications reduce the efficacy of traditional treatments. These challenges in wound care are increasingly caused by comorbidities such as obesity and diabetes as well as surging rates of antibiotic resistance. As a result, there is an urgent need for alternative treatment options. Gaseous ozone has shown great promise as a potential new treatment for infected dermal wounds. In this brief review of current wound therapy techniques found in the literature, an in-depth discussion of the mechanisms, benefits, and results of topical ozone gas as a therapy for infected dermal wounds is presented. This includes studies of ozone applied to wounds performed in vitro, in vivo, and clinical settings, as well as the use of ozone as an adjunct therapy for increasing the efficacy of traditional treatments. The overwhelming evidence suggests that ozone exhibits significant antimicrobial properties and has been shown to promote wound healing factors, especially when applied between 5-60 ppm. As such, this promising alternative therapy warrants a significant investment of time and resources to fully utilize ozone as an effective treatment against antibiotic resistant bacteria and other rising challenges in wound treatment.

Ozone as a Topical Treatment for Infected Dermal Wounds.

In this paper, the electrical characteristics and optical emission spectroscopy of a dielectric barrier discharge ozone generator with water as the grounding electrode are investigated. The gas temperature of the microdischarge channel and at the reactor outlet have also been studied. Results show that the working plasma has a very small effect on the increase in gas temperature at the reactor outlet. At applied power frequency of 5 kHz and applied peak voltage of 7 kV, the microdischarge temperature is obtained as 310 K from N2(C3Πu → B3Πg) spectra ranging from 370-381 nm. In addition, the plasma emission spectra of gas mixtures (95 % O2 + 5 % N2) are investigated and the microdischarge temperature is determined as 309 K with applied power frequency of 5 kHz and applied peak voltage of 8 kV. It is concluded that observed microdischarge temperatures reaches the lowest values reported for filamentary air discharges, capable of promoting ozone production. 

A novel dielectric barrier discharge ozone generator with excellent microdischarge temperature behavior

In the present research, an innovative oscillatory slug flow reactor (OSFR) under the treatment of gas–liquid phase pulsed discharge plasma was developed for biodiesel production. The main goal was continuous production of high quality biodiesel at low temperature and pressure. Experimental tests were carried out under the influence of four main operating parameters including applied voltage, molar ratio, reactant flow rate, and catalyst concentration. The response surface method was employed to optimize experimental tests. The results showed that the proposed technology provided 94% production efficiency under the optimal conditions of voltage 19.4 kV, molar ratio 6.4, flow rate 2.7 ml/s, and catalyst 0.9 wt. %. According to the statistical analysis, increasing the applied voltage and reducing the flow rate have a strong effect on the Fatty Acid Methyl Ester yield, while the concentration of potassium hydroxide and methanol have less effect on the overall efficiency. In addition, the characteristics of the produced biodiesel were in accordance with ASTM D6751 standards. Surprisingly, the optimal energy consumption in this system was 95 kJ/l, which is more economically viable. In general, this study showed that the combined system of gas/liquid phase plasma in the OSFR reactor has a high synergistic potential for the transesterification reaction.

Optimization of methyl ester synthesis using gas/liquid phase pulsed discharge plasma in a novel oscillatory slug flow reactor

Discharge mode is an important parameter for ozone synthesis by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Currently, it is still challenging to stably generate glow discharge with oxygen at atmospheric pressure. In this paper, a DBD reactor with a layer of silver placed between the electrode and the dielectric layer (SL-DBD) was developed. Experimental results show that both streamer and glow corona discharge were stably generated under sinusoidal excitation with a 0.5 mm discharge gap in a parallel-plate DBD, due to the increased electric field strength in the discharge gap by the silver layer. It was also found that, in the SL-DBD reactor, glow corona discharge enhances the discharge strength by 50 times. The spectral peak of O at 777 nm in SL-DBD is increased to 28,800, compared with 18,389 in a reactor with a streamer only. The SL-DBD reactor produces ozone with a concentration of as high as 150 g/m3 and shows good stability in an 8 h durability test.
