The development of STEAM educational policy to promote student creativity and social empowerment

Animal urban agriculture has a vital role to feed the ever-growing population of African cities. However, there is a lack of knowledge on animal farming, animal feed and manure recycling in cities. Here, we mapped animal farms in Kampala City. We determined the number and type of animals kept. We identified animal feeds and the manure management practices. The results show that animal farms are predominantly located on the periphery of the city. Poultry are the dominant animal species in the city, followed by pigs, cattle, goats and sheep. The most common feedstuffs are fruit and vegetable peel and pasture. Sixty percent of the animal manure is discarded, whereas 32 % is recycled as fertiliser. Therefore, the fertiliser potential of manure is underutilised.

Discussions concerning science and technology convergence too often ignore the social sciences. This is not the case here, as the focus is on a relatively newly emerging and increasingly relevant social science field. Astrosociology is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary field that promotes and represents convergence of the physical/natural sciences and the social/behavioral sciences on all matters pertaining to humanity’s interests and activities in space and the consequences of these activities for people on Earth. While political science and economics have sustained a strong interest in space, interest on the part of anthropology, sociology, and several fields of psychology has been low. Also, with the exception of selected space science research areas including astrobiology, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and the protection of the Earth from asteroids and comets, the receptivity of physical and natural scientists to inputs from the social and behavioral sciences has been low. This chapter emphasizes the need for convergence, the barriers to convergence, and potential approaches to reduce these barriers. Achievement of unprecedented levels of collaborative synergy is possible with increased levels of sustained convergences. This is possible by increasing social science literacy among the public and “hard scientists” and developing win-win research projects that accommodate varied interests and goals. SETI, astrobiology, and planetary defense serve as specific examples of successful convergence efforts, though they involve social scientists in relatively small numbers. These examples demonstrate both the limited successes and the largely untapped potential of the social sciences to contribute to space education and research.

Astrosociology (Social Science of Space Exploration).

ABSTRACT The Kauffman School is a public charter school serving students from low-income neighborhoods in Kansas City, Missouri. This paper used a matched comparison group design to estimate the impacts of the Kauffman School on student achievement, attendance, and suspensions. We found that the Kauffman School had large positive impacts on student achievement in mathematics, reading, and science. This paper also used qualitative data to explore possible mechanisms for the school's effects. We found evidence that the Kauffman School's hallmarks are being implemented faithfully, and that stakeholders believe the school's methods are having a positive influence on students' attitudes and performance
