Purpose




Assessment of manufacturing systems provides a baseline for manufacturing strategy (MS) formulation. The purpose of this paper is to develop and propose a maturity assessment model for manufacturing systems (MAMMS). The MAMMS provides a maturity index, in order to establish manufacturing system performance on five possible levels: preinfantile, infantile, industry average, adult, and world class manufacturing.




Design/methodology/approach




Three main steps were taken: MAMMS design; maturity-level assessment in two companies; and MAMMS validation. Based on an action-research process, several research tools, such as surveys, expert panels, and immersion in two manufacturing companies, were used.




Findings




By integrating 79 variables into a maturity index, the maturity level for two manufacturing companies was obtained. Considering three main components (competitive priorities, manufacturing levers, and manufacturing’s strategic role), the analyzed companies showed a performance at the average industry level. According to participants, the MAMMS is a valuable tool to support decision making in MS.




Practical implications




Empirical evidence supports the relevance of the proposed MAMMS and its practical usefulness. In particular, the maturity index identifies strengths and weaknesses in the manufacturing system, providing a baseline from which to deploy MS.




Originality/value




The literature review shows a lack of contributions regarding maturity models, particularly, the non-existence of maturity assessment models for manufacturing systems. The proposed MAMMS is a valuable tool to support decision making in MS. Also, this paper contributes to understanding the action-research paradigm, for further research in operations management.

A maturity assessment model for manufacturing systems

Abstract This review examines the trend of applying theories in LM performance and offers the latest recapitulation of related theories in LM performance. The methodology is based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) to search for multiple scientific information databases and to guarantee that no important study is overlooked. For the single theory, highly employed theories were the Theory of Constraints, Resource-based View/Natural Resource-based View Theory (RBV/NRBV), and Contingency Theory (CT). Meanwhile, several articles employed integrations of several theories in a publication. Concerning the year of publication, significant growth in articles with underpinned theories was published from 2020 onwards. This study offers several significant contributions to researchers to widen the knowledge related to the adaptation of theories in the field of lean performance, as research underpinned by a theory offers a solid and convincing result in investigating the research problems. The first limitation was the search string to identify the related articles, which could be extended to maximize the article search. The other limitation was the database used which was limited to the Scopus database. Despite the importance of underpinning theory in research, OM has been criticized for the inadequacies of its theory, with only one-third of OM research incorporating theory. However, a limited review was conducted on the theories used in LM performance theory. To reduce this gap, this review examines the trend of applying theories in LM performance and offers the latest recapitulation of related theories in LM performance.

Systematic Literature Review: Theory Perspective in Lean Manufacturing Performance

Rapidly diagnosing the status of resource efficiency and waste generation throughout the entire value chain is considered one of the key future advancements towards achieving more sustainable production. This study aimed to develop and implement a self-assessment tool to assist companies in decision-making processes for establishing circular flows based on the principles of Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Circular Economy (CE). The self-assessment tool employed a maturity model comprising several stages, which were designed through a combination of design science research and scenario planning. The Lean-Circular Maturity Model (LCMM) consisted of maturity levels ranging from 0 to 4, assessing strategies such as Resource Efficiency, Energy Management, Water and Wastewater Management, Materials and Solid Waste Management, and Chemicals and Emissions Management. The model was applied to nine companies varying in sector, size, region, and nationality. Their engagement in LM, and CE, differed, as did their strategy maturity metrics. Primary sector companies showed higher maturity in water-waste and chemical-emissions management. Larger enterprises focused on these strategies, with nuances based on region. The main findings indicated that 66% of the companies sought cleaner alternatives prior to mapping their production processes, which could lead to errors in planning and prioritizing improvement actions. Furthermore, 61% of the companies lacked sufficient training and employee awareness regarding the efficient utilization of resources. The absence of comprehensive actions to manage the life cycle of products throughout the value chain emerged as the primary barrier identified. To address these gaps, the LCMM offers a set of tailored recommendations for each company to enhance processes, products, and the value chain based on the final score obtained from utilizing the LCMM self-assessment tool.

Lean Manufacturing is continuously transforming in the era of Industry 4.0, merging digital technologies with conventional manufacturing processes focusing on sustainability through Circular Economy principles. This evolution of Business Systems has led to the newly formulated term ‘Digital Green Lean’, which contains the synergy between Lean Manufacturing, Digital transformation, and Sustainability principles. The research is driven by the need for a maturity assessment for leadership and business culture, enabling companies using Lean Manufacturing principles to evaluate their readiness and alignment with the principles of Industry 4.0 and Circular Economy. Organizations must adapt their Lean practices to remain efficient, digital, sustainable, and competitive. Method/Findings – The article consists of a literature review on maturity assessment, with the keywords Industry 4.0, Circular Economy, Lean Culture, Lean Leadership, and theoretical development for the maturity assessment, including evaluation criteria. The assessment includes (1) three dimensions, ten subdimensions, and 38 systems for Digital Green Lean Business Culture and (2) four dimensions, 19 subdimensions, and 43 skills for Digital Green Lean Leadership, to be evaluated in a developed five maturity levels. Implications – This research includes the first development of a maturity prescriptive and comparative assessment for companies to assess, compare, and develop action plans in their Lean journey within the context of Industry 4.0, Circular Economy, Lean Culture, and Lean Leadership, as part of the new integrated Digital Green Lean (DGL).

A maturity model for assessing Digital Green Lean leadership and culture implementation in manufacturing companies

In this science research explosion century, the competitive economic environment and manufacturers are forced to follow the development and changes to protect their existence with respect of delay, quality and cost challenges, therefore lean manufacturing concepts become part of solution, contrariwise some manufacturers, especially small and medium –sized enterprises (SME) suffer to implement these concepts, this paper purpose to define an advanced model of lean manufacturing system (LMS) based on ISO:9001 version 2015 principles and VDA6.3 version 2016 norm, suggest a maturity model to evaluate the maturity level of LMS which has been confirmed through a statistical studies, Nevertheless, few works related to this field make academic research and industry closer, our work falls within this context through the industrial productivity improvement. This paper proposes also some research perspectives aiming to complete this research axis by enhancing the presented model through other industrial experiments and studies.
