Dissolved Oxygen Downstream of an Effluent Outfall in an Ice-Covered River: Natural and Artificial Aeration
Iran Eduardo Lima Neto,David Z. Zhu,Nallamuthu Rajaratnam,Tong Yu,Mark Spafford,Preston McEachern +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors modeled the behavior of the effluent plume and the resulting open-water lead development in the Athabasca River, Alberta, Canada downstream of a pulp mill diffuser.

Model development for prediction and mitigation of dissolved oxygen sags in the Athabasca River, Canada.
TL;DR: The model can be used as a management tool with updated SOD values to forecast the DO in low flow years and evaluate mitigation measures and can be applied to manage other ice-covered rivers.

Spatial Variation of Sediment Oxygen Demand in Athabasca River: Influence of Water Column Pollutants
Kusumakar Sharma,Preston McEachern,Mark Spafford,David Z. Zhu,Tong Yu +4 more
- 12 May 2009
TL;DR: Sediment samples were collected from fifteen different locations along the Athabasca River in an attempt to quantify the sediment contribution to oxygen demand as discussed by the authors, and the results showed that SOD rates are a primary forcing function in large high order rivers that should be determined from complex physical and chemical factors that control it rather than from water column nutrients.

Naphthenic acids quantification in organic solvents using fluorescence spectroscopy
TL;DR: The fluorescence technique for quantifying total naphthenic acids directly in organic solvents is a cost-effective analytical method compatible with the solid phase extraction of the sample.
