Emotion recognition is the ability to precisely infer human emotions from numerous sources and modalities using questionnaires, physical signals, and physiological signals. Recently, motion recognition has gained attention because of its diverse application areas, like affective computing, healthcare, human–robot interactions, and market research. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of emotion recognition techniques of the current decade. The paper includes emotion recognition using physical and physiological signals. Physical signals involve speech and facial expression, while physiological signals include electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, galvanic skin response, and eye tracking. The paper provides an introduction to various emotion models, stimuli used for emotion elicitation, and the background of existing automated emotion recognition systems. This paper covers comprehensive searching and scanning of well-known datasets followed by design criteria for review. After a thorough analysis and discussion, we selected 142 journal articles using PRISMA guidelines. The review provides a detailed analysis of existing studies and available datasets of emotion recognition. Our review analysis also presented potential challenges in the existing literature and directions for future research. 

Emotion recognition and artificial intelligence: A systematic review (2014–2023) and research recommendations

This paper explores the current machine learning based methods used to identify Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and depression in humans. Prevalence of mental ADHD and depression is increasing worldwide, partly due to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for the latter but also because of the increasing demand placed on the mental health services. It is known that depression is the most common mental health condition, affecting an estimated 19.7% of people aged over 16. ADHD is also a very prevalent mental health condition, affecting approximately 7.2% of all age groups, with this being conceived as a conservative estimate. We explore the use of machine learning to identify ADHD and depression using different wearable and non-wearable modalities for training and testing. These modalities include functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Medical Notes, Video and Speech. With mental health awareness on the rise, it is necessary to survey the existing literature on ADHD and depression for a machine learning based reliable Artificial Intelligence (AI). With access to in-person clinics limited and a paradigm shift to remote consultations, there is a need for AI-based technology to support the healthcare bodies, particularly in developed countries. 

Machine Learning in ADHD and Depression Mental Health Diagnosis: A Survey

One of the most serious forms of brain stroke is intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). When an artery bursts, the brain and the tissue around the artery start bleeding. This study proposes a joint feature selection strategy to classify computed tomography (CT) images of intracranial hemorrhage. The joint feature set is composed of transform and texture features. Joint features are constructed from a combination of grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) features, discrete wavelet features (DWT), and discrete cosine features (DCT). Brain hemorrhage CT image classification uses ensemble-based machine learning (ML) techniques. On the training dataset, a Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) is applied to treat the problem of oversampling by adding fresh data. Additionally, the sequential forward feature selection technique is used to obtain feature subsets. The classification accuracy is further examined for varied feature vector sizes. Confusion matrix, precision, and recall in categorization are employed as performance evaluation measurements. The ML-based ensemble classifiers can produce highly accurate results with the aid of the proposed novel feature extraction mechanism. When taking into consideration a crucial feature set consisting of six features, it can be seen that Random Forest obtained the greatest accuracy, which is 87.22%. 

A novel machine learning-based feature extraction method for classifying intracranial hemorrhage computed tomography images

Abstract Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly employed to diagnose and monitor brain disorders, however, manual analysis is time-consuming. Hence, researchers nowadays are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for automatic analysis of EEG, involving task-specific feature extraction and classification. Extracting multiple non-linear features from multiple EEG channels enhances the performance of classification, but it also results in high-dimensional features. However, the presence of the "curse of dimensionality" poses challenges for classifiers in AI-based EEG analyzers, leading to overfitting and complexity in classification. Therefore, in this empirical review, the effectiveness of the existing dimensionality reduction techniques to mitigate the curse of dimensionality in EEG feature sets is analyzed. We begin this study, by overviewing the extracted high-dimensional features from EEG signals related to disorders such as schizophrenia, alcoholism, focal seizures, focal seizures with deep features, and depression. Subsequently, 23 reduction techniques were reviewed, which transform the high-dimensional EEG features into a new reduced feature space to improve the classification. The impact of the reduced features was evaluated using traditional AI-based classifiers (support vector machine (SVM) and k -nearest neighbor ( k -NN)). 10-fold cross-validation was performed for training and testing, and the performance was evaluated using accuracy, selected features, and dimensionality reduction rate (DRR) metrics. Comprehensive analysis of projection techniques on diverse EEG datasets offers valuable insights to assist researchers in selecting the most suitable technique. The hybrid projection technique termed principal component analysis-based t -distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (PCA+ t -SNE) achieved an impressive average accuracy of 93.36%, surpassing the k -NN classifier without reduction techniques. 

Mitigating the curse of dimensionality using feature projection techniques on electroencephalography datasets: an empirical review

Abstract In this study, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder, is being studied alongside its comorbidity, conduct disorder (CD), a behavioral disorder. Because ADHD and CD share commonalities, distinguishing them is difficult, thus increasing the risk of misdiagnosis. It is crucial that these two conditions are not mistakenly identified as the same because the treatment plan varies depending on whether the patient has CD or ADHD. Hence, this study proposes an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based deep learning system known as ADHD/CD-NET that is capable of objectively distinguishing ADHD, ADHD + CD, and CD. The 12-channel EEG signals were first segmented and converted into channel-wise continuous wavelet transform (CWT) correlation matrices. The resulting matrices were then used to train the convolutional neural network (CNN) model, and the model’s performance was evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation. Gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) was also used to provide explanations for the prediction result made by the ‘black box’ CNN model. Internal private dataset (45 ADHD, 62 ADHD + CD and 16 CD) and external public dataset (61 ADHD and 60 healthy controls) were used to evaluate ADHD/CD-NET. As a result, ADHD/CD-NET achieved classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and precision of 93.70%, 90.83%, 95.35% and 91.85% for the internal evaluation, and 98.19%, 98.36%, 98.03% and 98.06% for the external evaluation. Grad-CAM also identified significant channels that contributed to the diagnosis outcome. Therefore, ADHD/CD-NET can perform temporal localization and choose significant EEG channels for diagnosis, thus providing objective analysis for mental health professionals and clinicians to consider when making a diagnosis. 

ADHD/CD-NET: automated EEG-based characterization of ADHD and CD using explainable deep neural network technique

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a devastating and life-threatening medical condition that can result in long-term physical and mental disabilities and even death. Early and accurate detection of Intracranial Hemorrhage (ICH) in TBI is crucial for analysis and treatment, as the condition can deteriorate significantly with time. Hence, a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective computer-aided approach that can initially capture the hematoma features is highly relevant for real-time clinical diagnostics. In this study, the Gray Level Occurrence Matrix (GLCM), the Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM), and Hu moments are used to generate the texture features. The best set of discriminating features are obtained using various meta-heuristic algorithms, and these optimal features are subjected to different classifiers. The synthetic samples are generated using ADASYN to compensate for the data imbalance. The proposed CAD system attained 95.74% accuracy, 96.93% sensitivity, and 94.67% specificity using statistical and GLRLM features along with KNN classifier. Thus, the developed automated system can enhance the accuracy of hematoma detection, aid clinicians in the fast interpretation of CT images, and streamline triage workflow.
