Abstract The global expansion of the bioenergy industry raises concerns, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation and sustainable management. To facilitate this, life cycle assessments beyond greenhouse gas emissions and energy balance are essential, along with the standardization of assessment methodologies to enable meaningful comparisons. Here, we review life cycle assessment, chemical aspects, and policy implication of bioenergy production. We discuss life cycle assessment in terms of concepts, methods, impacts, greenhouse gases, land use, water consumption, bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, and techno-economic analysis. Chemical aspects comprise reaction processes and means to improve efficiency. Concerning policies, tools, and frameworks that encourage sustainable energy production are presented. We found that carbon dioxide removal ranges from 45 to 99% in various bioenergy processes. The review also emphasizes the importance of chemistry in advancing sustainable bioenergy production for a more sustainable and secure energy future. 

Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis of sustainable bioenergy production: a review

Although coal ashes (CA) can be converted into an eco-friendly product through vermicomposting, the utility of vermiconverted CA in agriculture still needs to be explored. Therefore, the feasibility of vermicomposted tea industry coal ash (VCA) as an alternative nutrient source for cabbage (Brassica oleracea, var. Capitata) production was evaluated through an on-field experiment in alluvial soil. Two types of vermicomposts were prepared using Eisenia fetida (VCAE) and Lampito mauritii (VCAL) and were applied in different combinations with chemical fertilizers. The results revealed a significant increase in nutrient availability (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in the soil treated with VCA, alongside a concurrent build-up of soil organic carbon stocks, activation of microbial growth, and enhanced soil enzyme activity. Additionally, VCA application substantially reduced toxic metals in the soil, thereby improving soil health and promoting the uptake of essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, manganese, copper, and zinc) in cabbage. Correspondingly, VCA application reduced the bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals (chromium, lead, and cadmium) from coal ash, ensuring safer food production. Notably, a 25 % substitution of chemical fertilizers with VCA and farmyard manure (FYM) led to a two-fold increase in the growth and productivity of cabbage. The economic assessment also indicated that large-scale and sustainable recycling of toxic tea industry coal ash in agriculture is feasible. Hence, by integrating VCA-based nutrient management into agricultural practices, developing nations can take significant strides toward achieving circular economy objectives while addressing environmental challenges associated with CA disposal.

Metal(loid) contamination of agricultural soils has become an alarming issue due to its detrimental impacts on soil health and global agricultural production. Therefore, environmentally sustainable and cost-effective solutions are urgently required for soil remediation. Biochar, particularly nano-biochar, exhibits superior and high-performance capabilities in the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil, owing to its unique structure and large surface area. Current researches on nano-biochar mainly focus on safety design and property improvement, with limited information available regarding the impact of nano-biochar on soil ecosystems and crop defense mechanisms in metal(loid)-contaminated soils. In this review, we systematically summarized recent progress in the application of nano-biochar for remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil, with a focus on possible factors influencing metal(loid) uptake and translocation in soil-crop systems. Additionally, we conducted the potential/related mechanisms by which nano-biochar can mitigate the toxic impacts of metal(loid) on crop production and security. Furthermore, the application of nano-biochar in field trials and existing challenges were also outlined. Future studies should integrate agricultural sustainability and ecosystem health targets into biochar design/selection. This review highlighted the potential of nano-biochar as a promising soil amendment for enhancing the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated agricultural soils, thereby promoting the synthesis and development of highly efficient nano-biochar towards achieving environmental sustainability. 

Nano-biochar as a potential amendment for metal(loid) remediation: Implications for soil quality improvement and stress alleviation.

Silicon (Si) fertilization is widely recognized to improve the development of crops, especially in tropical soils and cultivation under dryland management. Herein, our working hypothesis was that Si stoichiometry favors the efficient use of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in sugarcane plants. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out using a 3 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of three cultivars (RB92579, RB021754 and RB036066) and three forms of Si application (control without Si; sodium silicate spray at 40 mmol L-1 in soil during planting; sodium silicate spray at 40 mmol L-1 on leaves at 75 days after emergence). All Si fertilizations altered the elemental C and P stoichiometry and sugarcane yield, but silicon-induced responses varied depending on sugarcane cultivar and application method. The most prominent impacts were found in the leaf Si-sprayed RB92579 cultivar, with a significant increase of 7.0% (11 Mg ha-1) in stalk yield, 9.0% (12 Mg ha-1) in total recoverable sugar, and 20% (4 Mg ha-1) in sugar yield compared to the Si-without control. In conclusion, our findings clearly show that silicon soil and foliar fertilization alter C:N:P stoichiometry by enhancing the efficiency of carbon and phosphorus utilization, leading to improved sugarcane production and industrial quality.

Silicon (Si) is the utmost element of the earth's crust involved in various plant processes. Despite being a non-essential element of the plant, its role in plant tolerance is appreciable. The interaction of Si with the plant cell wall provides structural and mechanical strength to the plants. This review article discusses the different forms of silica (simple to complex), the nature of Si, and its interaction with plant cell wall components after being taken up by plants. Ligands of plant cell wall like hemicellulose, pectin, lignin, cellulose, callose, and mixed-linked glucans (MLG) are the possible linker, which helps the Si in crosslinking with the plant cell wall. This review also incorporates the interrelation of Si with different cell wall components, the role of Si-cell wall complexes in different stress alleviation, and enhancing stress resistance in plants. Accumulation of Si after crosslinking with the cell wall provides rigidity and stability to the plant wall and enhances mechanical strength. Many studies have been conducted on the Si role in different stress alleviation, but little knowledge is available on how plants react when Si is taken up, how Si interacts with the plant cells, how Si accumulation is enhanced by the plant itself, how the possible ligands help Si in bonding with the cell wall. This study helps to understand the relationship of cell wall components with Si and to think about the precise bonding patterns between them.
