Economic Empowerment of Women Through Self-Help Groups

Discrimination against women in the form of male-female differentiation constitutes the core of the gender-based system. The education is the biggest lib- erating force and the rise in the levels of education which nourishes progressive outlook and the advent of industriali- zation and modernization have effected a sea change in the attitudes and thinking pattern of the people. The empow- erment is not essentially political alone in fact; political empowerment will not succeed in the absence of economic empowerment. The scheme of micro financing through Self Help Groups (SHGs) has transferred the real economic power in the hands of women and has considerably reduced their dependence on men. This has helped in empower- ment of women and building self-confidence. Women empowerment through self help groups

The present study was conducted in Parbhani District of Marathwada region of Maharashtra state. The Parbhani and Gangakhed taluka of Parbhani district were purposively selected for the study. A sample of 120 respondents was purposively selected, on the basis of their involvement in food processing and dairy management, considering 60 respondents from each taluka. The respondents were interviewed with the help of well structured interview schedule. The findings revealed that majority of the respondents had medium level of participation in food processing and dairy management practices. Majority of the respondents faced the constraints of dominance of mail members in family, lack of information about food processing and animal rearing practices was observed.

A study was conducted in three socio-cultural zones viz. Majha, Malwa and Doaba of Punjab to understand the problems of self help groups in managing the group activities. An interview schedule was developed to collect data on problems encountered by the members of self help groups in management of group activities from 200 women members of 12 self help groups (SHG's) selected by using multi-stage sampling design. Marketing problem emerged as the most serious hurdle perceived by the members of the SHG's with the average percentage mean score of 58.33. It was followed by production problems (mean score 53), family problems (mean score 40.5). Other problems faced by the members were leadership problems, organizational problems, financial problems and social problems. There is need to overcome these hurdles by providing appropriate facilities for smooth functioning of self help groups. Further the problems encountered by the women of self help groups in the study facilitate the stake holders for better future planning regarding formation and working of the group.
