People are interconnected, and so their health is interconnected. In recognition of this social fact, there has been growing conceptual and empirical attention over the past decade to the impact of social networks on health. This article reviews prominent findings from this literature. After drawing a distinction between social network studies and social support studies, we explore current research on dyadic and supradyadic network influences on health, highlighting findings from both egocentric and sociocentric analyses. We then discuss the policy implications of this body of work, as well as future research directions. We conclude that the existence of social networks means that people's health is interdependent and that health and health care can transcend the individual in ways that patients, doctors, policy makers, and researchers should care about.

Social modeling of eating: A review of when and why social influence affects food intake and choice.

Purpose To review the current literature about potential determinants of fruit and vegetable intakes and effective intervention strategies to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among 6–12-year-old children.

Methods  A structured review of literature located in PubMed and Psychinfo electronic literature databases.

Results  Of all determinants, the availability and accessibility of fruit and vegetables and taste preferences were most consistently and most positively related to consumption. There was some evidence that parental fruit and vegetable intakes, knowledge of intake recommendations and skills had a positive association with children's intakes, whereas television viewing, exposure to television advertisement, and having a snack bar at school were associated with lower intakes of fruit and vegetables. Multi-component school-based interventions that combined classroom curriculum, parent and food service components showed the greatest promise for fruit and vegetable promotion among children. School fruit and vegetable subscription programmes, scout-based interventions, and fruit and vegetables education via computer multi-media channels also appear promising.

Conclusions  Interventions should improve the availability and accessibility of fruit and vegetables to children, and should aim to improve their taste preferences for them. Such interventions should be of a multi-component nature, school-based or use other social channels and may include multi-media channels.

Determinants of fruit and vegetable consumption among 6-12-year-old children and effective interventions to increase consumption.

Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are the main contributors to overweight and obesity, which are among the leading risk factors for the major noncommunicable diseases. The most significant consequences for health of overweight and obesity include hypertension and hyperlipidaemia (major risk factors), coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, osteoporosis and psychosocial problems.

Influence of peers and friends on children's and adolescents' eating and activity behaviors.

Objective: To measure children’s consumption of, and liking for, fruit and vegetables and how these are altered by a peer modelling and rewards-based intervention. Design: In this initial evaluation of the programme, children’s consumption of fruit and vegetables were compared within and across baseline and intervention phases. Setting: Three primary schools in England and Wales. Subjects: In total, 402 children, aged from 4 to 11 y. Intervention: Over 16 days, children watched six video adventures featuring heroic peers (the Food Dudes) who enjoy eating fruit and vegetables, and received small rewards for eating these foods themselves. Main outcome measures: Fruit and vegetable consumption was measured (i) in school at lunchtime and snacktime using a fivepoint observation scale, with inter-rated reliability and weighed validation tests; and (ii) at home using parental recall. A questionnaire measured children’s liking for fruit and vegetables before and after the intervention. Results: Consumption during the intervention was significantly higher than during baseline at lunchtime and at snacktime (Po0.001 in all instances). Consumption outside school was significantly higher during the intervention on weekdays (Po0.05) but not weekend days. Following the intervention, children’s liking for fruit and vegetables also showed a significant increase (Po0.001). Conclusions: The peer modelling and rewards-based intervention was shown to be effective in bringing about substantial increases in children’s consumption of, and expressed liking for, fruit and vegetables.
