Future directions for the development of virtual reality within an automotive manufacturer.

In line with the advances in technology and communication, medical simulations are being developed to support the acquisition of requisite psychomotor skills before real-life clinical applications. This review article aimed to give a general overview of simulation in a cognate field, clinical dental education. Simulations in dentistry are not a new phenomenon; however, recent developments in virtual-reality technology using computer-generated medical simulations of 3-dimensional images or environments are providing more optimal practice conditions to smooth the transition from the traditional model-based simulation laboratory to the clinic. Evidence as to the positive aspects of virtual reality include increased effectiveness in comparison with traditional simulation teaching techniques, more efficient learning, objective and reproducible feedback, unlimited training hours, and enhanced cost-effectiveness for teaching establishments. Negative aspects have been indicated as initial setup costs, faculty training, and the lack of a variety of content and current educational simulation programs.

There is a tremendous interest among researchers for the development of virtual, augmented reality and games technologies due to their widespread applications in medicine and healthcare. To date the major applications of these technologies include medical simulation, telemedicine, medical and healthcare training, pain control, visualisation aid for surgery, rehabilitation in cases such as stroke, phobia and trauma therapies. Many recent studies have identified the benefits of using Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality or serious games in a variety of medical applications. This research volume on Virtual, Augmented Reality and Serious Games for Healthcare 1 offers an insightful introduction to the theories, development and applications of virtual, augmented reality and digital games technologies in medical and clinical settings and healthcare in general. Virtual reality and haptics are novel human-machine interaction technologies which have shown a good application potential in many fields such as medical, entertainment, manufacturing, and education areas in the last 20 years. Especially for dental surgery simulation and training, they provide a new and low-cost approach whereby dentists can practice procedures as many times as they want at no incremental cost and training can take place anywhere. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of virtual reality and haptics for dental surgery simulation and training. Some new ideas and recent research progress are investigated, the major research efforts and their typical systems are introduced, and the involved major research issues are summarized, and finally future trends and conclusions are discussed.

Virtual Reality and Haptics for Product Assembly

Virtual reality (VR)-based assembly training has been an interesting topic for the last decades. Generally, there are two shortcomings for nowadays virtual assembly training systems. One is that the operators cannot move around the virtual environment in a natural way as people activity in the real world: they are constrained in a fixed position or can only move in a limited space. The other is that most of the virtual assembly training systems are based on geometry constraint modeling only, which lacks haptics feedback. A new type haptics-based virtual environment system for assembly training of complex products is described in this paper. A new low-cost motion simulator is designed and integrated with the virtual environment to realize free walking by human. An automatic data integration interface is developed to transfer geometry, topology, assembly, and physics information from a computer-aided design system to a VR application, and a hierarchical constraint-based data model is rebuilt to construct the virtual assembly environment. Physics-based modeling and haptics feedback are undertaken to simulate the realistic assembly operations. The application examples and evaluation experiments demonstrate that both motion simulator and haptics have great value for training of assembly processes.
