Due to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as a low specific density, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, low friction, good dispersion stability, enhanced adsorbing capacity, large interlayer shear force, and wide bandgap, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures are of great interest in many fields. These include, but are not limited to, (i) heterogeneous catalysts, (ii) promising nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells and nanoparticles containing therapeutic agents to fight bacterial and fungal infections, (iii) reinforcing phases in metal, ceramics, and polymer matrix composites, (iv) additives to liquid lubricants, (v) substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, (vi) agents for boron neutron capture therapy, (vii) water purifiers, (viii) gas and biological sensors, and (ix) quantum dots, single photon emitters, and heterostructures for electronic, plasmonic, optical, optoelectronic, semiconductor, and magnetic devices. All of these areas are developing rapidly. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze the critical mass of knowledge and the current state-of-the-art in the field of BN-based nanomaterial fabrication and application based on their amazing properties.

Recent Progress in Fabrication and Application of BN Nanostructures and BN-Based Nanohybrids

ABSTRACT Quantum dots based on two-dimensional materials (2D-QDs) have received significant attention due to their exceptional physical, chemical, and biological properties. They have shown unprecedented performance and efficiency in many fields including electronics, spintronics, energy, water treatment, sensors, and biological applications. This article provides a critical review on the recent progress of 2D-DQs, their synthesis approaches, categories, properties, and applications. The review introduces various types of 2D-QDs, such as graphene, hBN, silicene, phosphorene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and MXenes that show a wide range of properties applicable for different fields. We describe in detail the electronic, magnetic, optical, catalytic, and biological properties of 2D-QDs and relate them to the suitable applications. Future directions for the research in 2D-QDs are given based on the novel properties provided by the newly discovered 2D materials and their heterostructures. Graphical Abstract

Luminescence multiplexing shows promising application prospects in information security, yet even outstanding time division multiplexing can only carry limited luminescence information. Time–space division multiplexing can greatly expand the information capacity by simultaneously transferring luminescence information in both time and space dimensions. Herein, time‐dependent polychrome stereoscopic luminescence system has been successfully developed by designing a 3D luminescence system based on resonance energy transfer (RET), in which afterglow lifetime easily regulated carbon dots‐in‐zeolite composites are used as energy donors and multicolor fluorescence quantum dots (QDs) as energy acceptors. Taking perovskite QDs (PeQDs) as example, by matching the energy donors with different afterglow lifetimes and the energy acceptors with different fluorescence colors, tunable afterglow emission of PeQDs with wavelength within 463–614 nm and lifetime within 232–1500 ms can be realized, in which the maximal RET efficiency reaches 95%. As a proof of concept, such novel luminescence system that carries eight layers of luminescence information involving four dimensions (time and 3D space) is successfully applied in advanced time–space division multiplexing. This work opens a new perspective for the application of time‐space integrated luminescence systems in advanced information multiplexing.

Time‐Dependent Polychrome Stereoscopic Luminescence Triggered by Resonance Energy Transfer between Carbon Dots‐in‐Zeolite Composites and Fluorescence Quantum Dots

Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), owing to their exceptional performances in device efficiency, color purity/tunability in the visible region, and solution-processing ability on various substrates, become a potential candidate for flexible and ultrathin electroluminescent (EL) lighting and display. Moreover, beyond the lighting and display, flexible QLEDs are enabled with endless possibilities in the era of the internet of things and artificial intelligence by acting as input/output ports in wearable integrated systems. Challenges remain in the development of flexible QLEDs with the goals for high performance, excellent flexibility/even stretchability, and emerging applications. In this paper, we review the recent developments of QLEDs including quantum dot materials, working mechanism, flexible/stretchable strategies, and patterning strategies, and highlight its emerging multifunctional integrations and smart applications covering wearable optical medical devices, pressure-sensing EL devices, and neural smart EL devices. We also summarize the remaining challenges and make an outlook on the future development of flexible QLEDs. The review is expected to offer a systematic understanding and valuable inspiration for flexible QLEDs to simultaneously satisfy optoelectronic and flexible properties for emerging applications. Flexible Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Device for Emerging Multifunctional and Smart Applications.

Hexagonal boron nitride quantum dot (BNQD) has aroused great interest in the optoelectronics field due to their metal-free nature with promising optical properties. However, it has been a great challenge to modulate its photoluminescence to the long-wavelength region so far. Herein, BNQDs with full-color emission (420-610 nm) have been implemented by doping diverse amino ligands in different solvents for the first attempt. This color variation from blue, green, yellow-green, yellow to red is ascribed to the surface states tunable via amination degree. Attractively, the quantum yield of our blue BNQDs has set a record at 32.27%, and rare yellow-green BNQDs have been demonstrated. Combining good thermal dissipation capability and high transparency, our full-color BNQD holds great potential for transparent flexible display and security labels at the elevated temperature.
