Infrequent transmission of HIV-1 drug-resistant variants.
Sabine Yerly,Stephanie Jost,Amalio Telenti,Markus Flepp,Laurent Kaiser,Jean-Philippe Chave,Pietro Vernazza,Manuel Battegay,Hansjakob Furrer,Bruno Chanzy,Philippe Bürgisser,Martin Rickenbach,Martin D. Gebhardt,Marie-Charlotte Bernard,Thomas V. Perneger,Bernard Hirschel,Luc Perrin +16 more
TL;DR: Neither sexual behaviour nor HIV-1 RNA levels explained the low transmission of drug-resistant variants, suggesting that drug- resistant variants and in particular multidrug-resistant variant have a substantially reduced transmission capacity.

The Role of Migration and Domestic Transmission in the Spread of HIV-1 Non-B Subtypes in Switzerland
Viktor von Wyl,Roger D. Kouyos,Sabine Yerly,Jürg Böni,Cyril Shah,Philippe Bürgisser,Thomas Klimkait,Rainer Weber,Bernard Hirschel,Matthias Cavassini,Cornelia Staehelin,Manuel Battegay,Pietro Vernazza,Enos Bernasconi,Bruno Ledergerber,Sebastian Bonhoeffer,Huldrych F. Günthard +16 more
TL;DR: Of all non-B infections diagnosed in Switzerland, <25% could be prevented by domestic interventions, and awareness should be raised among immigrants and Swiss individuals with partners from high prevalence countries to contain the spread of non- B subtypes.
Systemic antibody responses to gut commensal bacteria during chronic HIV-1 infection
Anna Haas,Kathrin Zimmermann,Frederik Graw,Emma Slack,Peter Rusert,Bruno Ledergerber,Walter Bossart,Rainer Weber,Maria Christine Thurnheer,Manuel Battegay,Bernard Hirschel,Pietro Vernazza,Nicola Patuto,Andrew J. Macpherson,Huldrych F. Günthard,Annette Oxenius +15 more
TL;DR: Overall systemic antibody responses to gut commensal bacteria were not affected during chronic HIV-1 infection, with titres decreasing when normalised to elevated plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels found in patients with HIV, and HIV-associated hypergammaglobulinaemia is unlikely to be driven by induction of antimicrobiota antibodies.
Performance of five different assays for the quantification of viral load in persons infected with various subtypes of HIV-1. Swiss HIV Cohort Study.
Philippe Bürgisser,Pietro Vernazza,Markus Flepp,Jürg Böni,Zuzana Tomasik,Urs Hummel,Giuseppe Pantaleo,Jörg Schüpbach +7 more
TL;DR: Amplicor performed best in terms of sensitivity and accuracy and accuracy (compared with NucliSens, PERT assay, and p24Ag) for non-B subtypes in group M samples for VL assessment in infections by group O or other highly divergent viruses.

Resurgence of HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Switzerland: mathematical modelling study.
A.I. van Sighem,Beatriz Vidondo,Tracy R. Glass,Tracy R. Glass,Heiner C. Bucher,Pietro Vernazza,Martin D. Gebhardt,F. De Wolf,S Derendinger,André Jeannin,Daniela Bezemer,Christophe Fraser,Nicola Low +12 more
TL;DR: The model outputs suggest that the increase in HIV transmission amongst MSM in Switzerland is the result of continuing risky sexual behaviour, particularly by those unaware of their infection status.
