Effect of pore structure and morphological characteristics of recycled fine aggregates from clay bricks on mechanical properties of concrete

Application of compressible packing model for optimization of asphalt concrete mix design

Reynolds dilatancy is one of the main mechanisms responsible for the lubrication layer (LL) formation during pumping of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). In this study, the effect of morphological characteristics of coarse aggregate on Reynolds dilatancy of 30 different SCC mixtures was investigated. The Reynolds dilatancy measurements were carried out using a coaxial-cylinders tribometer. New methodology to evaluate the morphology of coarse aggregate using 3D image analysis was also proposed. The Reynolds dilatancy values of the investigated SCC mixture were well correlated to both the morphological characteristics of coarse aggregate (>1.25 mm) and visco-elastoplastic properties of the suspending fine mortar ( Moreover, the thickness, composition and rheological properties of the LL, as well as the rheological properties of the investigated SCC mixtures were successfully evaluated using the Reynolds dilatancy and morphological measurements. The pumpability of the investigated SCC mixtures were then predicted using the estimated rheological properties of the investigated mixtures and their corresponding LL. The results showed that higher Reynold dilatancy and lower rheological properties of SCC can decrease the pressure loss and facilitate the pumping process. Moreover, the pumpability of SCC was found to be more controlled by the volume of cement paste, concentration, and packing density of coarse aggregate.

Rheo-morphological investigation of Reynolds dilatancy and its effect on pumpability of self-consolidating concrete

Stability and compressive strength of 30 self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures proportioned with normal and low binder contents were investigated as biphasic suspensions of fine mortars ( 1.25 mm). Static and dynamic stability of the investigated SCC mixtures were evaluated using the penetrometer and T-Box set-ups, respectively. Moreover, the morphological characteristics of different size subclasses of coarse aggregate were assessed using 3D image processing. The investigated fine mortars were characterized in terms of the visco-elastoplastic properties and compressive strength. A new lattice factor was proposed to evaluate the particles’ lattice effect on stability of SCC. On the other hand, new empirical models were proposed to evaluate the inter-particle squeeze force and drag coefficient of the irregularly-shaped coarse aggregate. According to the established correlations, among the morphological characteristics of coarse aggregate, the mean diameter and 3D surface area of coarse aggregate exhibited the most dominant effect on stability (static and dynamic) and compressive strength of SCC, respectively. From rheological point of view, the yield stress and plastic viscosity of fine mortar were found as the main viscoplastic parameters which significantly control the stability of SCC.
