Strategies for heavy oil desulfurization were evaluated by reviewing desulfurization literature and critically assessing the viability of the various methods for heavy oil. The desulfurization methods including variations thereon that are discussed include hydrodesulfurization, extractive desulfurization, oxidative desulfurization, biodesulfurization and desulfurization through alkylation, chlorinolysis, and by using supercritical water. Few of these methods are viable and/or efficient for the desulfurization of heavy oil. This is mainly due to the properties of the heavy oil, such as high sulfur content, high viscosity, high boiling point, and refractory nature of the sulfur compounds. The approach with the best chance of leading to a breakthrough in desulfurization of heavy oil is autoxidation followed by thermal decomposition of the oxidized heavy oil. There is also scope for synergistically employing autoxidation in combination with biodesulfurization and hydrodesulfurization.

Deep desulfurization: reactions, catalysts and technological challenges

The paper presents a new experimental device made to analyze the thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) behavior of connecting-rod bearings functioning in severe conditions. First, it focuses on the test bench description. The general principle of the test bench and then the main original technological solutions used with respect to the functional specifications are detailed. Two numerical models are described. They were developed in order to design and to validate two central components of the experimental device. Finally, the paper comments on the test results used to understand and validate the traction∕compression loading system, which is one of the key points in the test bench behavior.

Nowdays, automotive designers attempt to limit the pollution and the fuel consumption, in order to answer customer’s environmental demands. To assist designers in this effort, it is important to analyze and to understand engines bearing mechanical behavior. Therefore, many experimental studies have been undertaken in the last 20 years [1–3]. Because of the great complexity of the con-rod bearing real environment, no experimental tests have been realized in realistic and severe conditions.
