It is demonstrated that metallic horseshoe-shaped (also referred to as u-shaped) nanostructures can exhibit a magnetic resonance in the optical spectral range. This magnetic plasmon resonance is distinct from the purely geometric $LC$ resonance occurring in perfectly conducting split rings because the plasmonic nature of the metal plays the dominant role. Similarly to the electrical surface plasmon resonance, the magnetic plasmon resonance is determined primarily by the metal properties and nanostructure geometry rather than by the ratio of the wavelength and the structure's size. Magnetic plasmon resonance occurs in nanostructures much smaller in size than the optical wavelength. Electromagnetic properties of periodically assembled horseshoe-shaped nanostructures are investigated, and the close proximity of the electrical and magnetic plasmon resonances is exploited in designing a negative index metamaterial. Close to the magnetic plasmon resonance frequency both magnetic permeability $\ensuremath{\mu}$ and electric permittivity $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ can become negative, paving the way for the development of subwavelength negative index materials in the optical range.

The optical properties of nanostructured metamaterials have been intensively studied during the past decade. It has been proposed by Pendry, who further developed earlier studies on negative refraction that a metamaterial with negative dielectric permittivity ℇ and negative magnetic permeability μ could be used for developing a super-lens providing a sub-wavelength resolution. According to Pendry, when the scattered light passes through a material with a negative refractive index, the evanescent components of the scattered field grow exponentially, allowing the restoration of the scattered image with subwavelength resolution. Smith, Padilla, Vier, and Shultz have demonstrated negative-refraction materials in the microwave range. These materials are also referred to as double-negative or left-handed materials (LHMs), because the electric field and magnetic field along with the wavevector form a left-handed system in this case. In addition to super resolution, the unusual counter-intuitive properties of LHMs, make them very promising for applications in resonators, waveguides, and other microwave and optical elements. Huge enhancement of the local em field, accompanying the subwavelength resolution, can be used to enhanced Raman and nonlinear spectroscopy of atoms and molecules distributed over the surface of a LHM.

Chapter 1 - Magnetic plasmon resonance

A short review of electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments of carbon nanotubes and onions is presented. The dielectric response function of these nanostructures is derived from electrodynamics. Loss spectra computed with the dielectric theory are compared with spatially-resolved experimental spectra. The main features of the loss spectra obtained with non-penetrating electrons can be attributed to surface plasmon excitations (π plasmon at 6 eV and π + σ plasmon at 15 and 17-18 eV).
