Aims We developed a textile-based wearable system, named MagIC, for the unobtrusive monitoring of one electrocardiogram (ECG) lead, respiratory frequency and motion. In the present study, we investigated the ability of this system to monitor cardiac rhythm and arrhythmic events in cardiac patients.

Methods and results The study was carried out by comparing ECG tracings simultaneously recorded by MagIC and traditional ECG devices (Trad-ECG) in 40 cardiac patients at rest and during physical exercise. Data were manually scored by two cardiologists. At rest the artefact rates observed with MagIC and Trad-ECG were virtually identical (1.4% of the registered signal); while during physical exercise the artefact rate observed with MagIC was much lower than with Trad-ECG (4.07 vs. 17.31%). Recordings from MagIC allowed a correct identification of the type of rhythm in the vast majority of patients (92.5%) and an estimation of PQ interval and QRS duration similar to Trad-ECG (<0.016 s). MagIC displayed a good performance in detecting arrhythmias, with only 14 misclassified events out of 3618, and both specificity and sensitivity being above 99%. No practical difference was observed in the estimation of the beat-by-beat RR interval by the two methods.

Conclusion This study indicates that in static condition MagIC has a capability of monitoring cardiac rhythm and arrhythmic events which is comparable with what obtainable by a traditional one-lead ECG recorder. During movement MagIC provides an ECG signal of better quality.

Non-invasive heart rate measurement is essential in medical and sport sciences Typically, the first stage of heart rate measurements is obtained from non-invasive sensors In this paper, the data from video sequences of a subject cycling are processed using short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to indicate the heart rate of the subject The choice of using STFT is its ability to provide more accurately localized temporal and frequency information, especially for the rapidly changing heart rate pattern during the exercise routine Experimental results show the proposed method can provide an acceptable result and the root mean square error is less than 25 beats per minute (BPM) for heart rate variations between 80 BPM and 130 BPM

Purpose/hypothesis: This study was designed to investigate the test–retest reliability, concurrent validity, and the standard error of measurement (SEm) of a pulse rate assessment application (Azumio®’s Instant Heart Rate) on both Android® and iOS® (iphone operating system) smartphones as compared to a FT7 Polar® Heart Rate monitor. Reliability and validity of a smartphone pulse rate application for the assessment of resting and elevated pulse rate

Firefighters are subject to extreme environments and high physical demands when performing duty-related tasks. Recently, physiological status monitors (PSM) have been embedded into a compression shirt to enable firefighters to measure, visualize, log, and transmit vital metrics such as heart rate (HR) to aid in cardiovascular risk identification and mitigation, thereby attempting to improve the health, fitness, and safety of this population. Validation of Heart Rate Derived from a Physiological Status Monitor-Embedded Compression Shirt Against Criterion ECG

Recent technical development focused on real-time heart rate monitoring instead of postexercise evaluation of recorded data. There are several systems on the market that allow direct and real-time monitoring of several individuals at the same time. The present study compared the systems of Polar, Acentas, Activio, and Suunto in a field test with twelve subjects regarding failure quota, operating distance, and ECG validity. Moreover, the installation and use of software and hardware were evaluated with a quality rating system. Chest belts were evaluated with a questionnaire, too. Overall the system of Acentas reached the best mark of all systems, but detailed results showed that every system has its advantages and disadvantages depending on using purpose, location, and weather. So this evaluation cannot recommend a single system but rather shows strength and weakness of all systems and additionally can be used for further system improvements.
