Purpose – To explore alliance managers' perceptions of the most significant determinants of strategic alliance success in the software sector.Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on 30 key informant interviews and a survey of 143 alliance managers.Findings – While both structural and process factors are important, the most significant factors affecting alliance success are the adaptability and openness of the alliance partners, human resource practices and partners' learning capability during implementation. Alliance partners should pay more attention to operational implementation issues as an alliance evolves, in order to achieve successful cooperative relationships.Research limitations/implications – This research has responded to the call for more empirical study of the underlying causes of successful alliances. This chapter will explain sourcing and explain how supply chain management has emerged as a crucial function in improving the effectiveness of the suppliers used by buyers in fashion retailing. ‘Effectiveness’ in this context is judged by a number of criteria, which are discussed in detail later in the chapter, but which ultimately must result in increased overall profitability. In their efforts to improve stock usage, fashion retailers have recognised that suppliers’ performance can have a big impact on profits.

Sourcing and supply chain management

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the impact of cooperative purchasing on buyers’ purchasing power. Purchasing in the humanitarian sector has traditionally been characterized by a low level of coordination due to inter-agency competition for funding, diverging mandates and other organizational differences. Relationships with commercial suppliers have also remained arm's-length and often dormant due to high levels of uncertainty and strict public procurement rules and regulations. However, recent pushes for increased efficiency and effectiveness are driving humanitarian agencies toward cooperative purchasing – a purchasing strategy that is claimed to be highly beneficial for members of the purchasing consortium not least for its ability to increase buyers’ purchasing power. Power is a complex concept in any relationship. Its relative, perceptive, intangible, context dependent, and multifaceted nature has made it difficult to study. In this research, the aim was not to study power per se, but to study purchasing in light of the existing constraints from power relations. This PhD dissertation is about buyers with low purchasing power, how they buy what they need, and how their decisions affect their power.
