The family plays an important and powerful role in the sexual socialization of children and adolescents. The information and messages that are (or are not) communicated between parents and children have the potential to shape sexual decision-making during adolescence, particularly related to HIV/AIDS risk behaviors. This paper presents a review and synthesis of three areas of the literature on parent-child communication about sexuality-content and process; predictors of parent-child communication; and behavioral outcomes associated with communication. Based on the review, gaps in the research and directions for future studies are discussed.

Parent-child communication about sexuality: A review of the literature from 1980-2002

Results: Parent-teenager discussions about sexuality and sexual risk were associated with an increased likelihood of teenager-partner discussions about sexual risk and of teenagers’ condom use, but only if parents were open, skilled and comfortable in having those discussions. Teenagers’ communication with their partner about sexual risk also was associated with greater condom use, but the relationship between parent-teenager communication and teenagers’ condom use was independent of this association. Conclusions: The influence on teenagers of parent-teenager discussions about sexuality and sexual risk depends on both what parents say and how they say it. Programs that foster parentteenager communication about sexuality and sexual risk must emphasize both of these aspects.

Parent-adolescent communication and sexual risk behaviors among African American adolescent females.

OBJECTIVES
The association between the timing of discussions about condoms between mother and adolescent and adolescents' condom use during their first and subsequent sexual encounters was examined.


METHODS
Sexually active adolescents reported whether and when they discussed condoms with their mother and answered questions about their own condom use.


RESULTS
Mother-adolescent discussions about condoms that occurred prior to sexual debut were strongly associated with greater condom use during first intercourse and most recent intercourse, along with greater lifetime regular condom use.


CONCLUSIONS
Discussions about condoms prior to sexual debut are important in promoting condom use among adolescents.

Patterns ofCondomUseAmong Adolescents: TheImpact of Mother-Adolescent Communication

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively synthesize the growing literature on the relationship between safer sexual communication (SSC) among sexual partners and condom use, and to systematically examine a number of conceptual and methodological moderators of this relationship. Data from 53 articles published in 27 journals met criteria for the study. Fifty-five independent effect sizes coded from samples totaling N=18,529 were meta-analyzed. Results indicate that the mean sample-size weighted effect size of the SSC-condom use relation was r=.22, and a number of conceptual variables were found to moderate this relationship. Specifically, communication about condom use (r=.25) and sexual history (r=.23) had significantly (p .05). Further, methodological moderators tended to be unrelated to effect size. Implications for the future study of safer sexual communication as well as the importance of emphasizing communication skills in HIV preventive interventions are discussed.
