Gas recognition is essential in an electronic nose (E-nose) system, which is responsible for recognizing multivariate responses obtained by gas sensors in various applications. Over the past decades, classical gas recognition approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA) have been widely applied in E-nose systems. In recent years, artificial neural network (ANN) has revolutionized the field of E-nose, especially spiking neural network (SNN). In this paper, we investigate recent gas recognition methods for E-nose, and compare and analyze them in terms of algorithms and hardware implementations. We find each classical gas recognition method has a relatively fixed framework and a few parameters, which makes it easy to be designed and perform well with limited gas samples, but weak in multi-gas recognition under noise. While ANN-based methods obtain better recognition accuracy with flexible architectures and lots of parameters. However, some ANNs are too complex to be implemented in portable E-nose systems, such as deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In contrast, SNN-based gas recognition methods achieve satisfying accuracy and recognize more types of gases, and could be implemented with energy-efficient hardware, which makes them a promising candidate in multi-gas identification.

Gas Recognition in E-Nose System: A Review

Due to the complexity of real environments, it is hard to detect toxic and harmful gases by sensors. To address such an issue, an artificial olfactory system is promoted, emulating the function of the human nose by means of gas sensors and an inference system. In this work, an artificial olfactory inference system based on memristive devices is developed to classify four gases (ethanol, methane, ethylene, and carbon monoxide) with 10 different concentrations. First, the spike trains converted from signals of the sensor array are inputted to a reservoir computing (RC) system based on volatile memristive devices, which extracts spatiotemporal features; then the features are processed by a classifier based on nonvolatile memristive devices; the output of the classifier indicates the classification result. Moreover, to reduce the device number and the power consumption, three strategies are applied to reduce the extracted features from the RC system. Eventually, the olfactory inference system successfully identifies the gases with a high accuracy of 95%.

An artificial olfactory inference system based on memristive devices

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems, based on von Neumann architecture and classical neural networks, have a number of fundamental limitations in comparison with the mammalian brain. In this article we discuss these limitations and ways to mitigate them. Next, we present an overview of currently available neuromorphic AI projects in which these limitations are overcome by bringing some brain features into the functioning and organization of computing systems (TrueNorth, Loihi, Tianjic, SpiNNaker, BrainScaleS, NeuronFlow, DYNAP, Akida, Mythic). Also, we present the principle of classifying neuromorphic AI systems by the brain features they use: connectionism, parallelism, asynchrony, impulse nature of information transfer, on-device-learning, local learning, sparsity, analog, and in-memory computing. In addition to reviewing new architectural approaches used by neuromorphic devices based on existing silicon microelectronics technologies, we also discuss the prospects for using a new memristor element base. Examples of recent advances in the use of memristors in neuromorphic applications are also given.

Neuromorphic artificial intelligence systems

Driven by the increasing significance of artificial intelligence, the field of neuromorphic (brain-inspired) photonics is attracting increasing interest, promising new, high-speed, and energy-efficient computing hardware for key applications in information processing and computer vision. Widely available photonic devices, such as vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), offer highly desirable properties for photonic implementations of neuromorphic systems, such as high-speed and low energy operation, neuron-like dynamical responses, and ease of integration into chip-scale systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate encoding of digital image data into continuous, rate-coded, up to GHz-speed optical spike trains with a VCSEL-based photonic spiking neuron. Moreover, our solution makes use of off-the-shelf fiber-optic components with operation at telecom wavelengths, therefore making the system compatible with current optical network and data center technologies. This VCSEL-based spiking encoder paves the way toward optical spike-based data processing and ultrafast neuromorphic vision systems.

Neuromorphic encoding of image pixel data into rate-coded optical spike trains with a photonic VCSEL-neuron

Artificial noses are broad-spectrum multisensors dedicated to the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Despite great recent progress, they still suffer from a lack of sensitivity and selectivity. We will review, in a systemic way, the biomimetic strategies for improving these performance criteria, including the design of sensing materials, their immobilization on the sensing surface, the sampling of VOCs, the choice of a transduction method, and the data processing. This reflection could help address new applications in domains where high-performance artificial noses are required such as public security and safety, environment, industry, or healthcare.

Bio-inspired strategies for improving the selectivity and sensitivity of artificial noses: A review

In several application domains, electronic nose systems employing conventional data processing approaches incur substantial power and computational costs and limitations, such as significant latency and poor accuracy for classification. Recent developments in spike-based bio-inspired approaches have delivered solutions for the highly accurate classification of multivariate sensor data with minimized computational and power requirements. Although these methods have addressed issues related to efficient data processing and classification accuracy, other areas, such as reducing the processing latency to support real-time application and deploying spike-based solutions on supported hardware, have yet to be studied in detail. Through this investigation, we proposed a spiking neural network (SNN)-based classifier, implemented in a chip-emulation-based development environment, that can be seamlessly deployed on a neuromorphic system-on-a-chip (NSoC). Under three different scenarios of increasing complexity, the SNN was determined to be able to classify real-valued sensor data with greater than 90% accuracy and with a maximum latency of 3 s on the software-based platform. Highlights of this work included the design and implementation of a novel encoder for artificial olfactory systems, implementation of unsupervised spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) for learning, and a foundational study on early classification capability using the SNN-based classifier.
