Globalizing knowledge economies foster conditions that intensify the role and value of organizational reputation risk In an enterprise-focused era, reputation is a key strategic construct that can act as a boundary object linking communities within and between organizations Yet approaches to its management tend to be reactive and remain under the hold of industrial society principles Definitions of reputation risk in the existing literature and the business community have a tendency to be static and asset oriented We suggest that this contrasts sharply with insights on the social construction of knowledge that inform recent risk studies Drawing on this critique, we argue that the ambivalence engendered by on-going processes of definition (responsibilities, boundaries, fact construction) characterizing the knowledge society demands a reconceptualization of reputation risk We propose a reconceptualization of reputation risk that not only incorporates a more sophisticated view of reputation, but also acknowledges the role that risk and trust relations can play in its constitution In addition to contributing to the theoretical development of reputation risk in the organization studies literature, we develop the notion of reputable action as a guiding principle for realizing active trust development in the practical management of reputation risk

Reconceptualizing and Managing Reputation Risk in the Knowledge Economy: Toward Reputable Action

Businesses increasingly consider corporate reputation as a valuable asset that has a positive impact on purchase intention. Concurrently, corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues have received growing attention and the importance of CSR has been increasingly emphasized. Claims have been made that both CSR and corporate reputation can provide a competitive advantage as in conjunction with perceived product quality they can influence purchase intentions. In this article we explore the interaction between these concepts and put forward a set of hypotheses about the expected linkages. Our discussion is based on findings from a study on a sample of customers of two brands of a traditional type of Italian Christmas cake – Panettone. The two brands are widely known in a specific geographical and cultural area and one is well known for its strong engagement in CSR activities. We conclude by discussing the limitations of our study and drawing implications for future research.

Dealing with the complete crisis—the crisis management shell structure

SUMMARY Effective crisis management requires information about the ways in which tourists of different nationalities respond to different types of crisis. This paper provides a model which can be used to quantify such effects. The model is applied to the case of American, French and German tourism demand in Scotland. The results show that French tourists were particularly affected by the foot and mouth disease crisis. Germans were most severely affected by the September 11 events. Although arrivals from the USA decreased after both crises, receipts were hardly affected.

Quantifying the Effects of Tourism Crises: An Application to Scotland

The significant transformations and advances attributed to the Era 5.0 require a comprehensive understanding of the current ramifications of the accounting discipline, along with the prospective difficulties and opportunities. This is pertinent not only in the context of industry, education, and society, but also in terms of labor relations and professions. Thus, the aim of this paper is to understand the current impacts and future expectations of the Era 5.0 on the accounting profession. Based on a recent systematic literature review we note the urgent and pressing need for educational institutions, their audiences, and other entities to interact in the changing process, creating synergies to ensure the success of retraining this valuable strategic resource in organizations and society, and the sustainability of the profession, promoting a sustainable Society 5.0. We contribute to the research on the consequences and challenges of the Era 5.0 in the future of the accounting profession by the originality of the contextualization of the profession in this new Era, filling a gap in the recent state of the art in the research of the accounting profession. We consider that this research will have an impact on academia, industry, and society, bringing these to work together in the development of the accountants’ skills and their future work.

Challenges of education in the accounting profession in the Era 5.0: A systematic review

The United States has pledged to develop a 100% carbon-free electric power system by 2035 and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050. While important advancements have been made in the scale, performance, and economics of clean energy technologies, meeting the nation's ambitious goals will not only require their deployment at scale, but also additional innovation and effective integration of different solutions. Technological developments across the broad suite of low-carbon energy solutions are advancing rapidly, with ongoing innovations in renewable electricity generation, industrial processes, and energy-saving technologies and services, including LED lighting, induction heating, electric vehicles, energy storage solutions, and mobility as a service, plus smart devices, controls, and more efficient and smart buildings. Combining renewable electricity with biotic and abiotic pathways to produce chemicals, fuels, and materials promises to deliver new solutions. Grid-interactive buildings and communities, integrating transportation infrastructure and vehicles, are likely to be significant components of any zero-carbon energy strategy. Low-carbon industrial manufacturing will also make strong contributions to a net-zero economy. While the technical prospects appear promising, variations in the state of infrastructure, jurisdictional and social equity, pollution, economic and socio-cultural constraints, energy resource availability, and supply chain dynamics found in different locations present a range of challenges and demand customized solutions. This paper provides a critical review and offers new insights into the technical, infrastructure, analytic, political, and economic challenges faced in translating the nation's ambitious net-zero-emissions goals into feasible and reliable implementation action plans. 

Challenges and opportunities in decarbonizing the U.S. energy system

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore the role of accountants as advisors in professional services firms (PSFs), and it examines the impact of digital transformation on the work, knowledge and skills of accountants in their role as advisors in PSFs.Design/methodology/approachData were collected using semi-structured interviews predominantly with partners in Australian PSFs, including the Big4 and directors of professional accounting bodies.FindingsThe findings show that accountants as advisors fill a critical role in PSFs as they represent substantial human capital for such firms. Accountants as advisors are a valuable strategic resource because of their unique capabilities in combining generic human capital with digital human capital and social capital resources. Some differences between the Big4 and non-Big4 were found in terms of services offered that were attributable to the respective industry foci and resource availability.Practical implicationsThe findings have broader implications for both the accounting profession and the education sector in terms of providing a better, and more overt, understanding of what the future holds for the accounting profession and the relevant knowledge and skills required. Also, recruiters and managers at PSFs are likely to benefit from the findings.Originality/valueEvidence from PSFs provides insights into an evolutionary path for the accounting profession, and the knowledge and skills accountants need to work in that increasingly competitive domain, due to digital transformation.
