Efficacy and economic assessment of conventional ventilatory support versus extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for severe adult respiratory failure (CESAR): a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

This is the latest updated volume in a well-established series bringing together information from a variety of sources to estimate national unit costs for a wide range of health and social care services. This report consists of tables for more than 130 types of service which, as well as providing the most detailed and comprehensive information possible, also quotes sources and assumptions so users can adapt the information for their own purposes. This year we have included a guest editorial on ‘Big Data’: increasing productivity while reducing costs in health and social care and three short articles on The cost of integrated care; Shared lives – improving understanding of the costs of family-based support and the costs of providing a group intervention to people with dementia and their family carers:SHIELD: RYCT & CSP intervention costs (Remembering Yesterday Caring Today and Carer Support Programme). There are also several new schema providing the costs of: advocacy for people with learning disabilities; a hospice rapid response service; the early years classroom management programme; residential parenting assessments; independent review officers; time banks; dentists and care home costs for people with dementia. The 2014 edition is also available in full, free of charge, at the PSSRU website www.pssru.ac.uk/unit-costs/2014/ as an Acrobat file.

The purpose of this study was to identify evidenced-based, focused intervention practices for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder. This study was an extension and elaboration of a previous evidence-based practice review reported by Odom et al. (Prev Sch Fail 54:275–282, 2010b, doi:
 10.1080/10459881003785506
 ). In the current study, a computer search initially yielded 29,105 articles, and the subsequent screening and evaluation process found 456 studies to meet inclusion and methodological criteria. From this set of research studies, the authors found 27 focused intervention practices that met the criteria for evidence-based practice (EBP). Six new EBPs were identified in this review, and one EBP from the previous review was removed. The authors discuss implications for current practices and future research.

Evidence-Based Practices for Children, Youth, and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Comprehensive Review.

This paper defines the research area of socially assistive robotics, focusing on assisting people through social interaction. While much attention has been paid to robots that provide assistance to people through physical contact (which we call contact assistive robotics), and to robots that entertain through social interaction (social interactive robotics), so far there is no clear definition of socially assistive robotics. We summarize active social assistive research projects and classify them by target populations, application domains, and interaction methods. While distinguishing these from socially interactive robotics endeavors, we discuss challenges and opportunities that are specific to the growing field of socially assistive robotics.

Unit Costs of Health and Social Care 2012

This randomized controlled trial looked at the effect of a new computer program designed to teach people with autistic spectrum disorders to better recognize and predict emotional responses in others. Two groups of 11 children (age 12-18) with autism or Asperger syndrome at two special schools participated: one group used the computer program for 10 half-hour sessions over 2 weeks. Within-program data showed a significant reduction in errors made from first to last use. Students were assessed pre- and post-intervention using facial expression photographs, cartoons depicting emotion-laden situations, and non-literal stories. Scores were not related to age or verbal ability. The experimental group made gains relative to the control group on all three measures. Gains correlated significantly with the number of times the computer program was used and results suggest positive effects. Further research could assess whether these gains generalized into real life or improved performance on theory of mind measures.

Evaluation of a New Computer Intervention to Teach People with Autism or Asperger Syndrome to Recognize and Predict Emotions in Others

The purpose of economic evaluation is to inform decisions as to the relative value of different courses of action, in a systematic, transparent way. Cost-effectiveness analysis involves assessing the costs and effects of two or more competing, alternative interventions against other uses if the same resources were used elsewhere. Applied to the social care context, a commissioner with a constrained budget might use this information to consider whether to invest public funds in a new intervention, programme or service or whether standard care represents the optimal choice of provision.

Research indicates that deaf children can have marked social difficulties compared with their hearing peers. Factors that influence these social interactions need to be reviewed to inform interventions. A systematic search of 5 key databases and 3 specialized journals identified 14 papers that met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality of the articles was assessed using an adapted checklist. There was a general lack of consensus across studies. The main factors investigated were the deaf child’s communication competency, age, and level of mainstreaming, which overall were positively associated with peer interactions. Some studies also found that females were more likely to have positive social interactions. The majority of studies were cross-sectional. Some studies lacked appropriate control groups and did not recruit an appropriate range of informants. A wide range of factors were associated with social interactions between deaf and hearing children. The role of communication gained the highest consensus across studies. Other factors were involved in more complex interactions. This review aimed to investigate the factors that are associated with and/or directly influence the social interactions between deaf children and their hearing peers. While individual studies have looked at the various factors that are associated with improved peer relationships between deaf children and hearing peers, no systematic review of the findings has yet been undertaken. By exploring these factors, parents, professionals, and policy makers are best informed to support and develop interventions to help deaf children enjoy positive social interactions, peer acceptance, and deep and meaningful friendships with their hearing peers. These relationships are associated with a wide range of positive outcomes, for children’s psychological well-being and their academic career. This could ultimately reduce risk factors in later life and increase resiliency against any future challenges.

Factors Associated With Social Interactions Between Deaf Children and Their Hearing Peers: A Systematic Literature Review

Background Recent research in the USA and UK indicates that person-centred planning (PCP) can lead to improvements in lifestyle-related outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). It is clear, however, that the introduction of PCP does not have an equal impact for all participants. The aim of the present paper was to identify factors associated with the probability of delivering a plan and with improvements in outcomes for those who did receive a plan. Methods Information on the life experiences of participants was collected over a period of approximately 2 years for a cohort of 93 adults with ID. Results There were powerful inequalities in both access to and the efficacy of PCP in relation to participant characteristics, contextual factors and elements of the PCP process. Conclusions Results are discussed in relation to implications for policy and practice for increasing the effectiveness of PCP and reducing inequalities in the life experiences of people with ID.
