dispersion of excitations in solids. In this thesis, we investigated how
 various elementary excitations of transition metal oxides show up in 
RIXS spectra.

conservation are discussed. At the opposite extreme are rare-earth systems (metals and oxides), in which the 4f electrons are almost localized with strong electron correlation. The observations are interpreted based on the effects of intra-atomic multiplet coupling and weak interatomic electron transfer, which are well described with an Anderson impurity model or a cluster model. In this context a narrowing of spectral width in the excitation spectrum, polarization dependence, and the magnetic circular dichroism in ferromagnetic materials are discussed. The authors then consider transition-metal compounds, materials with electron correlation strengths intermediate between semiconductors and rare-earth systems. In these interesting cases there is an interplay of intra-atomic and interatomic electronic interactions that leads to limitations of both the band model and the Anderson impurity model. Finally, other topics in resonant x-ray emission studies of solids are described briefly.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra for electrons in solids

The techniques of neutron diffraction and x-ray diffraction, as applied to structural studies of liquids and glasses, are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the explanation and discussion of the experimental techniques and data analysis methods, as illustrated by the results of representative experiments. The disordered, isotropic nature of the structure of liquids and glasses leads to special considerations and certain difficulties when neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques are applied, especially when used in combination on the same system. Recent progress in experimental technique, as well as in data analysis and computer simulation, has motivated the writing of this review.

Neutron and x-ray diffraction studies of liquids and glasses

Investigating electronic structure and excitations under extreme conditions gives access to a rich variety of phenomena. High pressure typically induces behavior such as magnetic collapse and the insulator-metal transition in 3d transition metals compounds, valence fluctuations or Kondo-like characteristics in $f$-electron systems, and coordination and bonding changes in molecular solids and glasses. This article reviews research concerning electronic excitations in materials under extreme conditions using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). IXS is a spectroscopic probe of choice for this study because of its chemical and orbital selectivity and the richness of information it provides. Being an all-photon technique, IXS has a penetration depth compatible with high pressure requirements. Electronic transitions under pressure in 3d transition metals compounds and $f$-electron systems, most of them strongly correlated, are reviewed. Implications for geophysics are mentioned. Since the incident X-ray energy can easily be tuned to absorption edges, resonant IXS, often employed, is discussed at length. Finally studies involving local structure changes and electronic transitions under pressure in materials containing light elements are briefly reviewed.

Inelastic x-ray scattering by electronic excitations under high pressure

The process of x-ray absorption and emission in solids is considered as an x-ray resonant inelastic scattering process. This coherent inelastic scattering picture has recently been used to interpret the excitation energy dependence in the x-ray emission spectra excited with synchrotron radiation. It also suggests that with near threshold excitation, the x-ray emission spectra should be spatially anisotropic. We consider the validity and implication of this approach and factors affecting the spatial and temporal coherence in the scattering process. Taking into account the relaxation effects such as the electron-electron and the electron-phonon interactions, a significant fraction of the total emission intensity may be attributed to the coherent scattering. This picture of the x-ray absorption and emission process opens up the possibility for momentum-resolved x-ray absorption and emission measurements that can be used for band-structure determination. In addition, it has important implications on the fluorescence yield method of obtaining the absorption spectra.
