Metal matrix composites offer the potential for improved specific properties as well as increased elevated temperature performance relative to their unreinforced alloys These are critical attributes for many aeroengine applications, making composites attractive despite their higher cost For brittle matrix systems such as intermetallics, reinforcement can also be used as a means of improving toughness In this chapter, a wide range of long fiber and discontinuously reinforced composite systems are considered from an aeroengine perspective based on aluminum, titanium, and intermetallic matrices moving from moderate-temperature systems towards hot ones Processing methods appropriate to each type are described Properties such as specific stiffness, strength, creep, and fatigue performance are considered Another important aspect is the propensity to generate residual stresses as a function of the mismatch in thermal expansion between the phases In the final section a range of potential aeroengine applications is examined

In the framework of HAIC European project, a capability for modeling glaciated and mixed-phase ice accretion has been added to IGLOO2D, the new ONERA 2D icing suite. A first set of models has been introduced for taking into account physical phenomena which are generally not considered for classical icing conditions: particle shape influence on the drag force, heat exchange between air and particles, melting and evaporation phenomena, complex particle interactions with dry and wetted walls, liquid film dynamics, influence of ice crystals on energy balance ... To assess this new capability, test cases have been performed for mixed-phase ice accretion using results from the NASA-NRC experimental database 3,4 . Glaciated and mixed phase ice accretion modeling using ONERA 2D icing suite

In this experimental and theoretical study, the impact of non-spherical and spherical ice particles onto a solid surface is investigated. The impact velocity of the particles was varied between 1 and 74 m s−1. The size of the particles ranged from 30 μm to 3.5 mm. The impact target consisted of a tiltable aluminium surface. The impact angles were set to 30° and 90° (normal impact). The impact process was recorded by a high-speed video system. Based on observations, four different fragmentation modes, characterized by different levels of particle damage, were defined. Fragmentation models for the description of the deformation of the particle and the development of cracks within the particle on impact are formulated and validated by the experiments. In particular, the velocity up to which no particle fragmentation occurs, and the maximum velocity up to which minor fragmentation occurs (both significantly dependent on the particle initial size) are well captured by the fragmentation models.

Ice crystal impact onto a dry solid wall. Particle fragmentation

To study hail ingestion of turbofan engines, it is essential to have an understanding about the impact of hailstones upon a solid surface. Basic ice impact characteristics hi terms of postimpact particle size, velocity, and mass distribution were studied experimentally with simulated hailstones. Two techniques were used, i.e., patternator and still photography. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed and the results from each technique presented. A parametric study was carried out, and the parameters investigated included impact angle, approach speed, and initial size of the simulated hailstones. Based on the experimental results, a set of empirical rules is defined for the basic disintegration characteristics of simulated hailstones upon impact.

Landing Site Reachability in a Forced Landing of Unmanned Aircraft in Wind

This paper describes the development of a system for the rapid prototyping of high level control algorithms using an Arduino based commercial off the shelf autopilot called ArduPilot. It is capable of controlling multiple vehicle types, including fixed, and rotary wing aircraft as well as ground vehicles. The inner loop control is performed by ArduPilot, so the high level control can be rapidly prototyped and tested in Simulink, or an embedded system. The ability to conduct tests in software and hardware in the loop has also be developed, to enable safe testing of algorithms, which will speed up the development process. To show its functionality and ability to assist with the development process of algorithms, ArduPilot is used with a remote controlled aircraft in simulation and in real world testing to verify newly developed high level algorithms for UAVs.
