Provided is an adaptive sound source vector quantization device which can always perform a pitch cycle search with a resolution appropriate for any section of the pitch cycle search range of a second sub-frame when a pitch cycle search range of the second sub-frame changes in accordance with a pitch cycle of a first sub-frame. The device includes a first pitch cycle instruction unit (111), a search range calculation unit (112), and a second pitch cycle instruction unit (113). The first pitch cycle instruction unit (111) successively instructs pitch cycle search candidates in a predetermined search range having a search resolution which transits over a predetermined pitch cycle candidate for the first sub-frame. The search range calculation unit (112) calculates a predetermined range before and after the pitch cycle of the first sub-frame as the pitch cycle search range for the second sub-frame, if the predetermined range includes the predetermined pitch cycle search candidate. In the predetermined range, the search resolution transits over a boundary defined by the predetermined pitch cycle. The second pitch cycle instruction unit (113) successively instructs the pitch cycle search candidates in the search range for the second sub-frame.

The present invention relates to a method and device for improving concealment of frame erasure caused by frames of an encoded sound signal erased during transmission from an encoder (106) to a decoder (110), and for accelerating recovery of the decoder after non erased frames of the encoded sound signal have been received. For that purpose, concealment/recovery parameters are determined in the encoder or decoder. When determined in the encoder (106), the concealment/recovery parameters are transmitted to the decoder (110). In the decoder, erasure frame concealment and decoder recovery is conducted in response to the concealment/recovery parameters. The concealment/recovery parameters may be selected from the group consisting of: a signal classification parameter, an energy information parameter and a phase information parameter. The determination of the concealment/recovery parameters comprises classifying the successive frames of the encoded sound signal as unvoiced, unvoiced transition, voiced transition, voiced, or onset, and this classification is determined on the basis of at least a part of the following parameters: a normalized correlation parameter, a spectral tilt parameter, a signal-to-noise ratio parameter, a pitch stability parameter, a relative frame energy parameter, and a zero crossing parameter.

Method and device for efficient frame erasure concealment in linear predictive based speech codecs

Packets of real-time information are sent with a source rate greater than zero kilobits per second, and a time or path or combined time/path diversity rate initially being zero kilobits per second. This results in a quality of service QoS, optionally measured at the sender or the receiver. When the QoS is on an unacceptable side of a threshold of acceptability, the sender sends diversity packets at an increased rate. Increasing the diversity rate while either reducing or maintaining the overall transmission rate is new. CELP-based multiple-description data partitioning sends the base or important information plus a subset of fixed excitation in one packet and sends the base or important information plus the complementary subset of fixed excitation in another packet. Reconstruction produces acceptable quality when only one of the two packets is received and better quality when both packets are received. Reconstruction provides for single and multiple lost packets.

A method and device for concealing frame erasures caused by frames of an encoded sound signal erased during transmission from an encoder to a decoder and for recovery of the decoder after frame erasures comprise, in the encoder, determining concealment/recovery parameters including at least phase information related to frames of the encoded sound signal. The concealment/recovery parameters determined in the encoder are transmitted to the decoder and, in the decoder, frame erasure concealment is conducted in response to the received concealment/recovery parameters. The frame erasure concealment comprises resynchronizing, in response to the received phase information, the erasure-concealed frames with corresponding frames of the sound signal encoded at the encoder. When no concealment/recovery parameters are transmitted to the decoder, a phase information of each frame of the encoded sound signal that has been erased during transmission from the encoder to the decoder is estimated in the decoder. Also, frame erasure concealment is conducted in the decoder in response to the estimated phase information, wherein the frame erasure concealment comprises resynchronizing, in response to the estimated phase information, each erasure-concealed frame with a corresponding frame of the sound signal encoded at the encoder.

Method and device for efficient frame erasure concealment in speech codecs

In a CELP coder a comparison between a target signal and a plurality of synthetic signals is made. The synthetic signal is derived by filtering a plurality of excitation sequences by a synthesis filter having parameters derived from the target signal. The excitation signal which results in a minimum error between the target signal and the synthetic signal is selected. The search for the best excitation signal requires a substantial computational complexity. To reduce the complexity a preselection of a small number of excitation sequences is made by selecting a small number of excitation sequences resembling the most a backward filtered target signal. With this small number of excitation sequences a full complexity search is made. Due to the reduced number of excitation sequences involved in the final selection the required computational complexity is reduced.

Reduced complexity signal transmission system

A CELP speech decoder includes a first portion comprising an adaptive codebook and a second portion comprising a fixed codebook. The CS-ACELP decoder generates a speech excitation signal selectively based on output signals from said first and second portions when said decoder fails to receive reliably at least a portion of a current frame of compressed speech information. The decoder does this by classifying the speech signal to be generated as periodic (voiced) or non-periodic (unvoiced) and then generating an excitation signal based on this classification. If the speech signal is classified as periodic, the excitation signal is generated based on the output signal from the first portion and not on the output signal from the second portion. If the speech signal is classified as non-periodic, the excitation signal is generated based on the output signal from said second portion and not on the output signal from said first portion.

A speech decoder includes a first portion comprising an adaptive codebook and a second portion comprising a fixed codebook. The decoder generates a speech excitation signal selectively based on output signals from said first and second portions when said decoder fails to receive reliably at least a portion of a current frame of compressed speech information.
