A framework for supply chain performance measurement

A system for extended enterprise planning across a supply chain is provided. The system includes transactional execution system layers (14, 18) for a demand enterprise (10) and a supply enterprise (12). First and second federated electronic planning interchange layers (16, 20) provide a data specification format and an external communication interface for transactional execution system layers (14, 18). A supply chain planning engine (22), operable to perform planning for the supply chain, is in communication with a third federated electronic planning interchange layer (24) which provides a data specification format and an external communication interface for the supply chain planning engine (22). A data access/transfer layer (28) interconnects and allows transfer of information between the first, second and third electronic federated planning interchange layers (16, 20, 24). The supply chain planning engine (22), the first transactional execution system (14) and the second transactional execution system (18) can thereby communicate data which the supply chain planning engine (22) can use to provide constraint based extended enterprise planning across the supply chain.

Competitive pressures in the global manufacturing environment are forcing manufacturing organizations to re‐engineer in order to become more competitive in the marketplace. Toward that end, management of these organizations is paying closer attention to the changing nature of manufacturing performance, and the systems, processes and measures used in its evaluation. Examines the literature concerned with issues related to the different facets of manufacturing organizational performance. Reviews and classifies articles published in relevant journals between 1988 and 2000. Based on this extensive literature review, identifies and discusses several issues relevant to both practice and theory of manufacturing performance measurement. Concludes by presenting a conceptual framework outlining the evolution of manufacturing performance measures and measurement in an organizational context.

A literature review of manufacturing performance measures and measurement in an organizational context: a framework and direction for future research

In the competitive world of today, each organization has a desire to sustain in the marketplace with the implementation of their healthier and flexible supply chain performance measurement (SCPM) system. For the successful implementation, needs to know the significant set of enablers. This study identifies a set of important enablers based on literature review and discussion with field experts of automobile manufacturing industries located in the National Capital Region of India. The vagueness and impreciseness of field expert’s judgements has been reduced using fuzzy decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (fuzzy DEMATEL) approach and analyzed the enablers in order to implement a flexible SCPM system. The findings of this research advocate that enabler ‘higher customer satisfaction’ comes in picture with highest value of ‘Prominence’ (6.4272) and ‘Relation’ (1.0354), therefore seems as a most significant and influencing enabler, while on other side the enabler ‘proper capacity utilization’ is considered as ample influencing enabler, because it has lowest Prominence’ (4.4735) and ‘Relation’ (minus 0.9680) values. This research discussed the categorization into the cause and effect group, degree of interaction and inter-relationship of considered enablers. The outcomes of this study may provide an aid to the managers to implement an effective and flexible SCPM system through which overall profitability of an organization may be improved.

Assessment of Critical Enablers for Flexible Supply Chain Performance Measurement System Using Fuzzy DEMATEL Approach

The purpose of this article is to investigate how the manufacturing process, the shop type and the data quality, i.e. the shop floor characteristics, influence the use of advanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems in production activity and control (PAC). The methodology implemented is a multiple case study at three case companies. Each company has different shop floor characteristics, but all use a scheduling module in an APS system, which supports production scheduling. A theoretical framework is developed suggesting how APS system are used in the PAC activities, and which major aspect to consider. The case analysis shows that the scheduling module in APS system, foremost supports sequencing and dispatching. In particular, the shop type is influenced by the decision of how often the APS runs and what freedom is given to the shop floor. The manufacturing process influences how the dispatch list is created. Contrary to the literature presuming that APS systems are most suitable in job shop processes, it is found that the manufacturing process is not a crucial factor when deciding whether APS systems are an appropriate investment. It is found that the level of data quality needed in the APS system depends to a large extent on how the dispatch list is used. For example, is the dispatch list used as a guideline, not a regulation, the need for accurate data in the module is reduced. This article extends the previous literature concerning APS systems by analysing how APS systems influence PAC as a whole and increase the understanding of the challenges of using APS systems in PAC.

Shop floor characteristics influencing the use of advanced planning and scheduling systems

Work undertaken in collaboration with BPICS, Cincom (UK) Ltd and ICI Engineering supported by funding from the EPSRC (CDP). The project reviewed planning and scheduling procedures in over 30 industrial companies over a two‐year period to establish best practice in shop‐floor scheduling and to identify the key factors for scheduling success. Outlines the research approach briefly to provide a framework for the analysis of scheduling performance by industrial sector and by scheduling tool. This includes a powerful method for the performance measurement of supply‐chain management systems which allows the comparison of effectiveness in different operating environments and when using a variety of scheduling approaches. Finite capacity scheduling tools: observations of installations offer some lessons

Discusses the relationships between finite schedulers which operate on output from a higher level in a conventional MRPII system, and so‐called stand‐alone schedulers which essentially operate directly on orders. Presents two graphical models – a demand flow model and a flowpipe model – which help to explain the differences between such schedulers and are used to illustrate the key features of each. Coupled schedulers tend to work on demand which has already been smoothed or planned in some way and can be described as planning‐led, whereas stand‐alone schedulers work from unfiltered data, with the operator reacting to schedule quality (due‐date performance, resource activation levels, etc.) and thence adjusting resource and rerunning. Ascribes the growth of the stand‐alone scheduler, at least in part, to the greatly increased computing power available quite inexpensively on modern equipment.
