The paper surveys the current state of knowledge of techniques for representing, manipulating and analysing dimensioning and tolerancing data in computer-aided design and manufacturing. The use of solid models and variational geometry, and its implications for the successful integration of CAD and CAM, are discussed. The topics explored so far can be grouped into four categories: (a) the representation ot dimensioning and tolerancing (D& T), (b) the synthesis and analysis of D& T, (() tolerance control, and (d) the implications of D& T in CAM. The paper describes in detail the recent work in each group, and concludes with speculation on a general framework k)r future research.

Review of dimensioning and tolerancing: representation and processing

The concept of smart manufacturing has become an important issue in the manufacturing industry since the start of the twenty-first century in terms of time and production cost. In addition to high production quality, a quick response could determine the success or failure of many companies and factories. One the most effective concepts for achieving a smart manufacturing industry is the use of computer-aided process planning (CAPP) techniques. Computer-aided process planning refers to key technology that connects the computer-aided design (CAD) and the computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) processes. Researchers have used many approaches as an interface between CAD and CAPP systems. In this field of research, a lot of effort has been spent to take CAPP systems to the next level in the form of automatic computer-aided process planning (ACAPP). This is to provide complete information about the product, in a way that is automated, fast, and accurate. Moreover, automatic feature recognition (AFR) techniques are considered one of the most important tasks to create an ACAPP system. This article presents a comprehensive survey about two main aspects: the degree of automation in each required input and expected output of computer-aided process planning systems as well as the benefits and the limitations of the different automatic feature recognition techniques. The aim is to demonstrate the missing aspects in smart ACAPP generation, the limitations of current systems in recognising new features, and justifying the process of selection.

The paper reviews the literature on the computer modelling of dimensions and tolerances. The success of manufacturing industries is becoming more dependent on the efficient management of large amounts of product data. Included in this data is information that defines the nominal shape of a product and its dimensions and tolerances. Although representation schemes for nominal geometry are now relatively mature, there is no universally recognized representation scheme for a product's dimensions and tolerances. The paper examines recent approaches to tolerance representation, and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Solid Modeling and the Interface Between Design and Manufacture

In a companion paper, we examined the representation of geometric tolerances in solid models from the perspective of certain functional requirements. We showed that assembly and material bulk requirements can be specified as virtual boundary requirements (VBRs). Here, we study the related issue of deriving equivalent alternative specifications. Specifically, we first explore the reasons for converting VBRs to another form of tolerances designated as conditional tolerances (CTs). We then develop a theoretical basis for converting VBRs to CTs and derive CTs for some common and practical VBRs. We thereby demonstrate the difficulties in finding a general-purpose algorithm for such conversions and also show that some of the CT formulas used in current practice are incorrect.

Geometric tolerancing: 2. conditional tolerances

This paper discusses basic problems of tolerancing mechanical parts. The problem of part design analysis (determination of consistency, determinacy and stability) is reduced to the analysis of systems of linear inequalities. It is shown that the calculation of resulting tolerances between components of parts can be easily solved by linear programming. A method is provided for the construction of a system of inequalities which the working dimensions and inaccuracies of machining operations must satisfy if a given tolerance specification is to be met.
