Paleomagnetic and environmental magnetic studies are commonly conducted on samples containing mixtures of magnetic minerals and/or grain sizes. Major hysteresis loops are routinely used to provide information about variations in magnetic mineralogy and grain size. Standard hysteresis parameters, however, provide a measure of the bulk magnetic properties, rather than enabling discrimination between the magnetic components that contribute to the magnetization of a sample. By contrast, first-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams, which we describe here, can be used to identify and discriminate between the different components in a mixed magnetic mineral assemblage. We use magnetization data from a class of partial hysteresis curves known as first-order reversal curves (FORCs) and transform the data into contour plots (FORC diagrams) of a two-dimensional distribution function. The FORC distribution provides information about particle switching fields and local interaction fields for the assemblage of magnetic particles within a sample. Superparamagnetic, single-domain, and multidomain grains, as well as magnetostatic interactions, all produce characteristic and distinct manifestations on a FORC diagram. Our results indicate that FORC diagrams can be used to characterize a wide range of natural samples and that they provide more detailed information about the magnetic particles in a sample than standard interpretational schemes which employ hysteresis data. It will be necessary to further develop the technique to enable a more quantitative interpretation of magnetic assemblages; however, even qualitative interpretation of FORC diagrams removes many of the ambiguities that are inherent to hysteresis data.

First-order reversal curve diagrams: A new tool for characterizing the magnetic properties of natural samples

The grain size dependence of various mineral (rock) magnetic parameters has been determined, using a series of essentially pure, fine-grained (single domain, SD) and ultrafine-grained (superparamagnetic, SP) magnetites. The parameters measured include low-field susceptibility, frequency-dependent susceptibility, saturation remanence (SIRM), anhysteretic susceptibility (XARM), and coercivity of remanence ((B0)CR). The magnetites were produced in experiments designed to simulate possible pedogenic and biogenic pathways of magnetite formation. Their mean grain sizes range from 0.012 um to 0.06 um, and hence span the SP/SD boundary. Isothermal magnetic measurements were performed on two separate subsets of differing packing densities. The response of the magnetic parameters is modified by interaction effects, but they display continuous variation across the entire grain size range, confirming their value for rapid magnetic granulometry. Within the fine and ultrafine end of the magnetite grain size spectrum, susceptibility, frequency dependent susceptibility and XARM are notably responsive to grain size change. In terms of magnetic response (and also possibly of grain size, shape and absence of cation substitution), these synhtetic magnetites represent close analogues of those found in some soils and sediments.

A data set of room temperature magnetic parameters for several iron oxides and sulphides was compiled from the available literature. The aim was to propose the most effective methods for assessing mineralogy, concentration and domain state within environmental magnetic studies. Establishing the magnetic mineralogy is essential for a correct interpretation of concentration and grain-size indicative parameters. Hematite and in particular goethite are recognised by their high (remanent) coercivities. The ratio of saturation remanent magnetisation to susceptibility is suited for assessing mineralogy; for low coercivity minerals, high values of the ratio are indicative of pyrrhotite. Greigite and maghemite both have intermediate ratios, while very low values suggest the presence of (titano)magnetite. From the concentration-dependent parameters mass specific susceptibility, saturation remanent magnetisation and susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetisation, susceptibility displayed the least grain-size dependence. Therefore, it is perhaps the best indicator of concentration, under the proviso of uniform mineralogy and when paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions are taken into consideration. All minerals showed a decrease in coercivity and remanence ratios with increasing grain size for sizes larger than one micrometer. In contrast, the coercivity of goethite showed an increase with grain size. Assessment of domain state was complicated by very small and large grains displaying similar magnetic properties.

The rock magnetism of fine particles

The “hard” isothermal remanent magnetization (HIRM) and the S-ratio are widely used in environmental magnetism to quantify the absolute and relative concentrations, respectively, of antiferromagnetic minerals (hematite and goethite) in mineral mixtures. We demonstrate that synthetic Al-substituted hematite and goethite exhibit a wide range of coercivities, which significantly influences the HIRM and S-ratio. These parameters are therefore not necessarily straightforward indicators of the absolute and relative concentrations of hematite/goethite. To circumvent this problem, we propose a new parameter (the L-ratio), which is the ratio of two remanences after alternating field (AF) demagnetization of an IRM imparted in a 1 T field with a peak AF of 100 mT and 300 mT: IRMAF@300mT/IRMAF@100mT. These parameters are easily measured using modern vibrating sample or alternating gradient magnetometers. Changes in HIRM only reflect changes in the absolute concentration of hematite and/or goethite if the L-ratio is relatively constant. Conversely, L-ratio fluctuations indicate variable coercivities that possibly reflect changes in the source of hematite/goethite. Corresponding HIRM and S-ratio variations should be interpreted with caution in such cases. The L-ratio can be determined using equivalent terms depending on available instrumentation and measurement protocols. For example, the HIRM is equivalent to IRMAF@300mT. Likewise, 0.5*(SIRM + IRM−100mT), where IRM−100mT represents the remanent magnetization obtained by first saturating the sample in a high field and then applying a back-field of −100 mT, is equivalent to IRMAF@100mT. The HIRM/[0.5*(SIRM + IRM−100mT)] ratio is therefore a suitable substitute for the L-ratio when measurements are made with a long-core magnetometer. The newly proposed L-ratio is straightforward to measure on a wide range of instruments and can provide significant new insights and reduce ambiguities associated with interpretation of two widely used parameters in environmental magnetism, the HIRM and S-ratio.

Summary. Remanent acquisition curves, remanent hysteresis curves and alternating field demagnetization curves were determined for a number of artificial rock specimens containing well-defined grain-size fractions between 5 and 250 μm of natural magnetite, titanomagnetite and hematite. From these curves, the remanent acquisition coercive force H'cr, the remanent coercive force Hcr and the median destructive field of IRM H½I were determined. Theoretically these parameters should be the same for an assembly of non-interacting, homogeneously distributed, randomly oriented single-domain grains. For a given hematite specimen H'cr, Hcr and H½I have about the same value in spite of the strong grain-size dependence of these parameters. For each specimen of magnetite and titanomagnetite the value of H'cr is larger than Hcr which again is larger than H½I. However, the ratios H'cr/Hcr and H½I/Hcr appear to have a (different) constant value. An interesting relationship which appears to hold for dispersed magnetite, titanomagnetite or hematite grains between 5 and 250 μm, independently of grain-size, quantity and packing density of the magnetic material, is:
