A forecast is provided of the cost of realizing an all-fiber network. It is based on the successful histories of fiber penetration into the trunk and feeder networks and is intended to help build a framework against which local or regional strategies for network evolution can be tested. Starting with the early trend data for fiber to the home (FTTH), the pattern for the complete conversion of the lop network to fiber is estimated. No attempt has been made to factor in the impact that greater demand for broadband, particularly in the business sector, may have in accelerating the process; the impact of unforeseen new technologies in reducing costs; or the effect of the European and Asian markets in driving down costs. The results do, however, suggest a smooth transition to broadband as part of the normal improvement and evolution of the network, with a time-frame consistent with other views on the evolution of broadband. >

Cost projections for fiber in the loop

A cost-effective methods of multiplexing, transmitting, and selecting optical video signals is proposed and demonstrated by using appropriate combinations of bidirectional optical trunk-amplifier, medium-density wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical space switching techniques for rapid cost-effective construction. The major factors affecting optical video transport/distribution system design are described. In particular, a tapping-type optical loop-shaped trunk section network is proposed from the viewpoint of system reliability, probability of call-loss, and "B-ISDN with analog overlay." The experimental results and design philosophy for an optical selector composed of WDM filters and space switches connected by silica-based waveguide on a chip are also discussed.

Fiber in the loop (FITL)—meaning the telephone residential loop plant—has been viewed as being important principally for a broadband network. Surprisingly, however, FITL is becoming less expensive than copper even for today's ordinary telephone services in new installations. Beyond first-cost parity, FITL has the potential for additional life-cycle savings arising from new or improved network capabilities (e.g., dynamic bandwidth allocation, automated service provisioning, and enhanced in-service performance monitoring), along with reduced fiber maintenance compared with copper. Equally important, FITL establishes a new loop network that is easily upgraded to broadband as needed.1
