In one aspect, a method of the invention includes the step of providing a processing system with a dual-kernel or multi-kernel software operating system. The operating system includes a supervisory operating system and a secondary operating system that provides network functions to user applications. The method also includes the step of providing a Network Control Software (NCS) in the supervisory operating system. The NCS is configured to transparently monitor and control network operations in the secondary operating system.

Cross-environment rendering and user interaction support provide a seamless computing experience in a multi-operating system computing environment. The multi-operating system computing environment may include a mobile operating system and a desktop operating system running concurrently and independently on a mobile computing device. Full user interaction support is provided for redirected and/or mirrored applications that are rendered using an extended graphics context. An extended input queue handles input events from virtual input devices for remotely displayed applications. Remotely displayed applications are mapped to separate motion spaces within the input queue. The mobile computing device may be a smartphone running the Android mobile operating system and a full desktop Linux distribution on a modified Android kernel.

One or more displays may be provided, each of which may have a corresponding independently controllable drawer displayable therein. The drawers may be opened in response to a gesture input to display data, such as notification data, application data, contact data, calendar data, weather data, etc. the drawers may be opened and/or closed individually or collectively. For instance, a characteristic of the gesture (e.g., a location of the gesture) may determine which of the drawers are opened in response to the gesture input.

The mobile computing device may be a smartphone running the Android mobile operating system and a full desktop Linux distribution on a modified Android kernel.

A method and apparatus for providing kernel mode support for fast IPC between a client process and a server process. A client application accesses a kernel mode of an operating system via a device driver or similar method. The client creates an abstract "resource" data type and derives a client port therefrom. The client port references a call structure containing object call data. The call is transported via a transport agent to the server. The server accesses the kernel mode of the operating system and creates a resource data type and a server port derived from the resource type. The server awaits calls from the clients using the server port. When a call arrives, the server port extracts the data from the call structure and performs the requested service. The server port then transmits a response back to the client. The use of the abstract resource data type permits portability across different operating systems and platforms.
