The change of very first chart on page 91 was quite impressive and made me interest of the concept of maximizing data ink ratio. Today, unlike the period of 1980s, we have great quad processing computer that can do all the graphical designs using its own GPU which results in realistic visual on 3Ds. Even though I agree this theory of maximizing data ink ratio, I think some decoration is quite necessary to emphasize the data you are retrieving.

When computing eigenvalues of symmetric matrices and singular values of general matrices in finite precision arithmetic we in general only expect to compute them with an error bound proportional to the product of machine precision and the norm of the matrix. In particular, we do not expect to compute tiny eigenvalues and singular values to high relative accuracy. There are some important classes of matrices where we can do much better, including bidiagonal matrices, scaled diagonally dominant matrices, and scaled diagonally dominant definite pencils. These classes include many graded matrices, and all symmetric positive definite matrices which can be consistently ordered (and thus all symmetric positive definite tridiagonal matrices). In particular, the singular values and eigenvalues are determined to high relative precision independent of their magnitudes, and there are algorithms to compute them this accurately. The eigenvectors are also determined more accurately than for general matrices, and may be computed more accurately as well. This work extends results of Kahan and Demmel for bidiagnoal and tridiagonal matrices. 17 refs.

This work advances our understanding of children's visualization literacy, and aims to improve it through a novel approach for teaching visualization at elementary school. We first contribute an analysis of data graphics and activities employed in grade K to 4 educational materials, and the results of a survey conducted with 16 elementary school teachers. We find that visualization education could benefit from integrating pedagogical strategies for teaching abstract concepts with established interactive visualization techniques. Building on these insights, we develop and study design principles for novel interactive teaching material aimed at increasing children's visualization literacy. We specifically contribute C'est La Vis, an online platform for teachers and students to respectively teach and learn about pictographs and bar charts, and report on our initial observations of its use in grades K and 2.

Classifying Remote Sensing Images (RSI) is a hard task. There are automatic approaches whose results normally need to be revised. The identification and polygon extraction tasks usually rely on applying classification strategies that exploit visual aspects related to spectral and texture patterns identified in RSI regions. There are a lot of image descriptors proposed in the literature for content-based image retrieval purposes that can be useful for RSI classification. This paper presents a comparative study to evaluate the potential of using successful color and texture image descriptors for remote sensing retrieval and classification. Seven descriptors that encode texture information and twelve color descriptors that can be used to encode spectral information were selected. We perform experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of these descriptors, considering image retrieval and classification tasks. To evaluate descriptors in classification tasks, we also propose a methodology based on KNN classifier. Evaluating the potential of texture and color descriptors for remote sensing image retrieval and classification

The comparison of digital images to determine their degree of similarity is one of the fundamental problems of computer vision. Many techniques exist which accomplish this with a certain level of success, most of which involve either the analysis of pixel-level features or the segmentation of images into sub-objects that can be geometrically compared. In this paper we develop and evaluate a new variation of the pixel feature and analysis technique known as the color correlogram in the context of a content-based image retrieval system. Our approach is to extend the autocorrelogram by adding multiple image features in addition to color. We compare the performance of each index scheme with our method for image retrieval on a large database of images. The experiment shows that our proposed method gives a significant improvement over histogram or color correlogram indexing, and it is also memory-efficient.
