Wizard of Oz Experimentation for Language Technology Applications: Challenges and Tools

Over the past decades research in the field of automatic speech recognition has lead to systems with a sufficiently high grade of maturity that makes them suitable for use in real-life applications. However, such recognition systems have been developed only for very few languages. Languages addressed are mainly those with a large population, a high economic power, or for which a high political interest exists. For the vast majority of the 4,000-7,000 languages in the world no well performing speech recognition systems exist. Languages are dying at a rapid rate. Linguists estimate that up to 90% of today’s languages may go extinct within a few generations. Often languages die, because their speakers abandon them in favor of a more wide-spread language, from which they expect more economic or cultural advantages. We believe that technology can play a role in stopping this trend, if it were to provide natural language processing technologies, including automatic speech recognition, for all languages in the world. The traditional way of training speech recognition systems for a new language requires the collection of large amounts of transcribed audio recordings, text resources, and the creation of a pronunciation dictionary. Considering the vast number of languages in the world in combination with the fact that most of them are only spoken by comparatively few speakers leads to the conclusion that this approach is not feasible when wanting to address all languages in the world. This paper presents a eldwork study of everyday interactions which appear to be relevant to the development of interactive Machine Translation systems. These interactions accompany activities by a person who lives in Dublin but does not speak much English. Performing seemingly simple activities such as shopping or taking the bus is shown to require a certain amount of preparation in order to make subsequent interactions predictable. When unexpected challenges arise, translation turns out to be one of several options: communication can also be accomplished via artefacts (e.g. by handing in a banknote) or avoided altogether when this is considered more convenient. A translator might be employed on occasion but accomplishing everyday activities do not seem to depend only on this. In fact, such interventions seem to contribute more to familiarising one with the context of the interaction than to improving their language skills. We comment on the mismatches between our analysis of such everyday life activities and the scenarios which tend to underlie the development of Machine Translation systems and conclude by identifying some promising directions for future work.

Interaction strategies by a non-English speaker in Dublin and their relation to Machine Translation

In 2008 the Olympics Games will be held in Beijing. For this purpose the city government of Beijing has launched the Special Programme for Construction of Digital Olympics. One of the objectives of the program is the use of artificial intelligence technology to overcome language barriers during the games. In order to demonstrate the contribution that speech-to-speech translation technology (SST) can make to solving this problem and in order to prove the feasibility of deploying such technology in the environment of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, we have developed the Digital Olympics Speech-to-Speech Translation System that addresses a general touristic domain with a special focus on pre-arrival hotel reservation. The system allows for rapid development of SST prototypes, the study of different user-interfaces and the on-the-fly comparison of alternative approaches to the individual problems involved in this task.
