Background: Adolescence is a developmental stage with biological, psychological, and social changes that will influence the individual functioning in adulthood. Recently, research on borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been focusing on dysfunctional and inflexible features in early ages, since a personality disorder does not appear suddenly in adulthood. The developmental path should be better understood and explored. Objective: Accordingly, the current study aimed at analyzing the contribution of psychological processes, specifically impulsivity, self-disgust, and self-compassion, for understanding borderline features in adolescence. Methods: This study had a cross-sectional design and a sample of 440 adolescents from the general population (278 girls and 162 boys), with ages ranging between 14 and 17 years. In SPSS, we conducted Student’s t-tests, Pearson correlations, and linear regressions. Results: Girls presented higher levels of self-disgust and borderline features in comparison with boys and lower levels of self-compassion. Regression models to test the predictive value of impulsivity, self-disgust and self-compassion on borderline features were significant. The model explained 43% of borderline features for boys and 57% for girls. For girls, all variables (impulsivity, self-compassion, and self-disgust) presented a significant contribution, and for boys, only impulsivity and self-compassion were significant predictors. Conclusions: These results added evidence of important variables to understand better borderline features in adolescents and identified sex differences in these psychological mechanisms. This study has important implications for research, clinical practice, and prevention.

Several studies suggested that Borderline Personality Disorder is related to early invalidating and harsh environments, characterized by scarce experiences of warmth and safeness, and possibly traumatic shameful memories. On the other hand, the ability to take a stance and not get fused with one’s internal experiences seems to be linked to diminished psychopathology. This study aims to understand the relationship between early emotional memories (of warmth and safeness experiences and shameful traumatic events) and borderline symptoms. Moreover, intends to explore the mediator role of decentering on the relationship between early emotional memories and borderline symptoms in a sample of 304 subjects from general community. Results showed significant correlations between early emotional memories, decentering and borderline symptoms. Additionally, our findings suggest that decentering mediate, at least partially, the effect of early emotional memories on borderline symptoms. Taken together, these findings point out for the importance of promoting decentering abilities with patients presenting borderline features.

Early Emotional Memories and Borderline Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Decentering

The Brief Quality of Life in Bipolar Disorder (Brief QoL.BD) questionnaire is a short version of the first disorder-specific scale developed for Bipolar Disorder (BD), the QoL.BD, designed for use in research settings. This questionnaire has been considered a useful measure to assess psychological interventions’ improvements. This study aimed to validate and assess the psychometric properties of the Brief QoL.BD. Method: The Brief QoL.BD questionnaire was translated to Portuguese according to international guidelines, and participants with BD, psychiatrists and psychologists were consulted regarding its intelligibility. It was then administered to 110 people with BD (M = 43.81 ± 11.72, 66.4% ♀; 33.6% ♂), in addition to other self-report questionnaires, to assess satisfaction with life, anxiety, depression, external shame and positive and negative affect. Results: The Brief QoL.BD revealed good internal consistency (a = .84). Positive correlations with satisfaction with life and positive affect supported the scale’s convergent validity. Significant negative correlations supported the divergent validity with negative affect, depression, anxiety and external shame. Confirmatory factor analysis validated the original one-factor structure showing a good fit. Conclusion: The Portuguese translation of Brief QoL.BD questionnaire (European) proved to be a valid, and reliable quality of life measure to be used with people with bipolar disorder. BD type II displayed significantly lower levels of QoL than type I. Brief QoL.BD is short and easy to apply, being recommended for research purposes, specifically tracking psychological intervention’s impact.

According to recent models of recovery in psychosis, the patients’ perspectives about their own difficulties, symptoms and goals (health-related and in other areas) are of major importance in intervention. Self-report measures have been increasingly studied and several authors have pointed out their validity, reliability and clinical utility in people with psychotic-disorders. The present study sought to review and critically analyse the available self-report instruments for assessing delusions. Four instruments met the inclusion criteria: Characteristics of Delusions Rating Scale; Beliefs Rating Scale; Peters Delusions Inventory; and Conviction of Delusional Beliefs Scale. All scales assess delusions in a multidimensional perspective and present adequate psychometric properties, although with high variability within studies. Refining the psychometric studies of the existing instruments (mainly confirmatory factor analysis, reliability and diagnostic accuracy analyses) and developing new instruments focused on coping are future areas of research interest.
