A multi-layer network element (12) for forwarding received packets from an input port to one or more output ports (38) with quality of service. When output queues (54) exceed or meet a threshold value below the queue's capacity packets are randomly discarded. When the queue becomes full, the network element determines which flow caused the queue to overflow. The priority of that flow is lowered. In a multicast packet, the packet may have different priorities at each output port. Scheduling of multiple output queues at each output port uses a weight round robin approach that allocates a weight portion of packets to transmit at each time interval. A packet is not interrupted during its transmission, even if the weight portion is met during a packet's transmission. The excess number of bytes transmitted as a result of not interrupting the packet are accounted for in the next round.

A multi-layer network element for forwarding received packets from an input port to one or more output ports. The packet is examined to look for first and second forwarding information. A packet is also assigned to a class and provided with default packet forwarding information. An associative memory is searched once for each type of information. The results from the two searches are combined with the default packet forwarding information to forward the packet to the appropriate one or more output ports. In some instances, the results of the first search dominate the forwarding decision, in other, the results of the second search dominate the forwarding decision, and in still other instances, the default information dominates.

A distributed architecture of multiple subsystems (410) delivers routing at wire-speed performance across subnetworks. Each subsystem (410) includes a forwarding memory (413) and an associated memory (414) and is configured to identify unicast and multicast packets for routing purposes, modify the packets in hardware, including replace VLAN information, and forward the packets to the next hop. The routing decisions are made in the inbound subsystem, and packets are forwarded, if necessary given the network topology, through a separate outbound subsystem.

A system and method for updating packet headers using hardware that maintains the high performance of the network element. In one embodiment, the system includes an input port process (IPP) (310) that buffers the input packet received and forwards header information to the search engine. The search engine searches a database maintained on the switch element to determine the type of the packet. The search engine sends the packet type information to the IPP along with the destination address (DA) to be updated if the packet is to be routed, or a VLAN tag if the packet has been identified to be forwarded to a particular VLAN. An output port process (OPP) (330) selectively performs additional modifications to the modified input packet and issue control signals to the output interface (i.e., MAC). The MAC (335) replaces the source address field with the address of the MAC (335) and generates a CRC that is appended to the end of the packet.

A switch, which connects ports on a customer port module to ports on a network port module via time slots on a dime division multiplexing bus, determines for each connection a number of required time slots, based on the current switch configuration and/or the signal traffic at the associated port The switch then determines if it has the required number of time slots available generally and if it can make the time slots available to the port If so, the switch assigns the time slots to the port and completes the connection The switch determines the number of time slots required by consulting a stored port type indicator table, which lists bandwidth demand based on port type, or by detecting in-band signaling information that indicates the bandwidth demand If the table indicates that the switch includes non-blocking ports, the switch coordinates the number of time slots allocated to a connection with the number of slots required to be kept free for the non-blocking ports The switch may thereafter dynamically allocate time slots to the connection, based on signal traffic The switch may be reconfigured at the request of a customer, by updating routing and port type information stored in the switch Also, control circuitry in the switch may initiate a reconfiguration, based on signal traffic
