A scalable content-addressable network
Sylvia Ratnasamy,Paul Francis,Mark Handley,Richard M. Karp,Scott Shenker +4 more
- 27 Aug 2001
TL;DR: The concept of a Content-Addressable Network (CAN) as a distributed infrastructure that provides hash table-like functionality on Internet-like scales is introduced and its scalability, robustness and low-latency properties are demonstrated through simulation.

The IP Network Address Translator (NAT)
K. Egevang,Paul Francis +1 more
- 01 May 1994
TL;DR: The two most compelling problems facing the IP Internet are IP address depletion and scaling in routing and the short-term solution is CIDR (Classless InterDomain Routing).
IDMaps: a global internet host distance estimation service
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a scalable Internet-wide architecture, called IDMaps, which measures and disseminates distance information on the global Internet, and present solutions to the measurement server placement and distance map construction problems in IDMaps.
NOYB: privacy in online social networks
Saikat Guha,Kevin Tang,Paul Francis +2 more
- 18 Aug 2008
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that NOYB is practical and incrementally deployable, requires no changes to or cooperation from an existing online service, and indeed can be non-trivial for the online service to detect.
A study of prefix hijacking and interception in the internet
Hitesh Ballani,Paul Francis,Xinyang Zhang +2 more
- 27 Aug 2007
TL;DR: The authors' hijacking estimates are in line with the impact of past hijacking incidents and show that ASes higher up in the routing hierarchy can hijack a significant amount of traffic to any prefix, including popular prefixes.
