• The effects of free radicals, ·OH and ·NO, generated in polluted dew water on needles of Pinus densiflora (Japanese Red pine) were investigated.
• ·OH-generating solutions (HOOH with Fe(III) and oxalate ion; ·OH treatment) and ·OH- and ·NO-generating solutions (NO2−; ·OH/·NO treatment) were regulated at 25, 50 and 100 µmol and pH 4.4. HOOH only (HOOH treatment) was used as a control solution. Solutions were applied as a mist to the needle surface of P. densiflora seedlings before dawn twice a week for 3 months.
• Within a month, net photosynthesis at near saturating irradiance (Pn) and stomatal conductance (gl) of ·OH-treated needles decreased with increasing solution concentration. The HOOH treatment had no effects on any of the measured parameters. Therefore, ·OH in the artificial dews caused the decreases in Pn and gl. In ·OH/·NO-treated needles, gl increased during the experiment, but Pn was unchanged. In all experiments, the characteristics of PSII were not significantly altered.
• Free radicals in polluted dew water have harmful effects on the photosynthesis of P. densiflora and compound effects of ·OH and ·NO are different.

Harmful effects of radicals generated in polluted dew on the needles of Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora)

Summary The condition of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests polluted by complex industrial emissions in the Prebaikalia region (East Siberia) is described using an eco-physiological approach. Prebaikalia is one of the largest industrial areas of Russia. On 54 study plots the following needle parameters were measured: percentage of defoliation, protein nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, soluble carbohydrates, starch, aluminium, cadmium, calcium, copper, fluorine, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, potassium, sodium, sulphur and zinc. The physiological condition of the pine tree stands was recorded on the basis of the protein nitrogen/nonprotein nitrogen ratio and the percentage of defoliation. Both parameters showed significant correlations with the accumulation of most pollutants. Five main damage classes were identified by a cluster analysis. The spatial distribution of these damage classes within the region is presented in a map.

L'etat des forets de pin sylvestre polluees par les emissions industrielles dans la region de Prebaikalia (Est de la Siberie) est decrit en utilisant une approche eco-physiologique. La region de Prebaikalia est une des plus grandes regions industrielles de Russie. Les parametres suivants ont ete pris en compte dans 54 placettes: pourcentage de defoliation, azote proteique et non proteique, carbohydrates solubles, amidon, aluminium, cadmium, calcium, cuivre, fluore, fer, plomb, magnesium, manganese, mercure, potassium, sodium, soufre et zinc. L'etat physiologique des pinedes a ete caracterise par le rapport azote proteique/azote non proteique, et par le pourcentage de defoliation. Ces deux parametres etaient significativement correles avec l'accumulation de la plupart des polluants. Cinq grandes classes de degâts ont ete identifiees par une analyse par cluster. La repartition spatiale de ces classes est presentee sur une carte de la region.

Es wird ein okophysiologischer Ansatz vorgestellt, um den Zustand von mit komplexen Industrieimmissionen belasteten Nadelwaldern zu erfassen. Die Untersuchung erfolgte in Kiefernbestanden (Pinus sylvestris) in der Region Prebaikalia (Ostsibirien), einem der grossten Industriegebiete Russlands. An 54 Standorten wurden folgende Parameter bestimmt: Nadelverlust, Protein-N, Nichtprotein-N, losliche Kohlenhydrate, Starke, Aluminium, Cadmium, Calcium, Kupfer, Fluor, Eisen, Blei, Magnesium, Mangan, Quecksilber, Kalium, Natrium, Schwefel und Zink. Der physiologische Zustand der Kiefernbestande wurde durch das Verhaltnis von Protein-N/Nichtprotein-N und den Prozentsatz der Entnadelung charakterisiert. Beide Parameter waren mit der Akkumulation der meisten Schadstoffe signifikant korreliert. Mit einer Cluster-Analyse wurden 5 Schadigungsklassen ausgewiesen, deren raumliche Verteilung in der Region Prebaikalia kartographisch dargestellt wird.

The physiological condition of pine trees in the Prebaikalia (East Siberia).

To elucidate the synergetic effects of acid rain on the development of pine wilt disease, we measured the sap flow rate in the stems and the chlorophyll content in the needles of 10-year-old Japanese black pine trees, Pinus thunbergii and 12-year-old Japanese red pine trees, Pinus densiflora, after exposure to simulated acid rain (SAR, pH 3) or tap water (TW, pH 6.3) as a control. The heat pulse method was used for the estimation of the sap flow rate. No apparent difference was found in the sap flow rate between the trees exposed to SAR and TW, but the chlorophyll content of needles at the end of the treatment was significantly higher in the trees exposed to SAR than in those exposed to TW. When the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the causal agent of pine wilt disease, was inoculated onto the Japanese black pines that had been exposed to SAR repeatedly for 1 year, the period to death was shortened. Japanese red pines that had been exposed to SAR for 2 years, however, did not show any development of symptoms after the nematode inoculation, suggesting that acid rain only affects pine wilt disease slightly, if at all.

Pour elucider les effets synergiques de la pluie acide sur le developpement du fletrissement des pins, nous avons mesure le flux de seve dans le tronc et le contenu en chlorophylle des aiguilles chez des Pinus thunbergii de 10 ans et des Pinus densiflora de 12 ans, apres les avoir soumis a une pluie acide (SAR, pH 3) ou d’eau ordinaire (TW, pH 6.3). La methode de la chaleur pulsee a ete utilisee pour evaluer le flux de seve. Aucune difference apparente de flux de seve n’a ete trouvee entre les arbres SAR et TW, mais le contenu des aiguilles en chlorophylle en fin d’experience etait significativement plus eleve chez les arbres SAR que chez les TW. Quand le nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus a ete inocule aux Pinus thunbergii soumis a SAR de facon repetee pendant un an, le delai de mortalite a ete raccourci. Les Pinus densiflora soumis a SAR pendant deux ans n’ont par contre montre aucun symptome apres l’inoculation, ce qui suggere que si la pluie acide affecte la maladie, son effet est faible.



Wirkung einer Langzeitbehandlung mit simuliertem Saurem Regen auf die Entwicklung der Kiefernwelke (Erreger: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus)



Es wurden mogliche synergistische Effekte einer Einwirkung von Saurem Regen auf die Entwicklung der Kiefernwelke untersucht. Dazu wurden zehnjahrige Pinus thunbergii und zwolfjahrige Pinus densiflora mit simuliertem Saurem Regen (SAR, pH 3) oder Leitungswasser (TW, pH 6,3, Kontrolle) behandelt und die Geschwindigkeit des Saftflusses im Xylem sowie der Chlorophyllgehalt in den Nadeln gemessen. Der Saftfluss wurde thermisch gemessen. Zwischen Behandlung und Kontrolle konnten keine Unterschiede im Saftfluss nachgewiesen werden, der Chlorophyllgehalt in den Nadeln war bei den mit Saurem Regen behandelten Baumen jedoch signifikant erhoht. Nach einer Inokulation mit dem Erreger der Kiefernwelke, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, wurde bei den Exemplaren von P. thunbergii, die zuvor ein Jahr lang mit Saurem Regen behandelt worden waren, die Zeitspanne bis zum Absterben verkurzt. Bei P. densiflora, die zwei Jahre lang mit Saurem Regen behandelt worden waren, entwickelten sich nach der Inokulation jedoch keinerlei Symptome. Aus den Ergebnissen lasst sich schliessen, dass Saurer Regen die Entwicklung der Kiefernwelke nicht oder nur sehr wenig beeinflusst.

The effects of long‐term exposure to simulated acid rain on the development of pine wilt disease caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Simulated acid rain (SAR) at three pH levels (pH 4, 3, 2) was applied to only the top or both the top and roots of 4-month-old Japanese black pine seedlings repeatedly for two months. Then the seedlings were inoculated with a virulent isolate (S10) of pinewood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. The exposure to SAR at any level did not kill the seedlings. When inoculated with nematodes, however, the nematode population build-up was significantly higher in the seedlings pretreated with SAR at any level than in the control at the 7th and 17th day after inoculation, and subsequent disease symptom development was also significantly accelerated by the exposure to SAR at pH 2 and 3. This result indicates that even acid rain at pH 4 has the potential for promoting population growth of pinewood nematodes in 4-month-old Japanese black pine seedlings.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit sollte gepruft werden, ob sich
eine quantitative Analyse der makroskopisch sichtbaren Symptome
auf Nadeln der Kiefer (Pinus
sylvestris L) zur Indikation des Alterungs- und
Schadigungsverlaufs der Nadeln verwenden lasst Hierzu wurden im
Berliner Forst Grunewald 240 Nadeln von 3 Baumen von Juni 1992
bis zu ihrem Abfall (spatestens Oktober 1995) in situ auf das
Vorkommen von 6 Symptomen untersucht Dabei wurden die bereits
vorhandenen Nadeln des Jahrgangs 1991 ab dem Lebensalter von 11
Monaten, die Nadeln des Jahrgangs 1992 wahrend ihrer gesamten
Lebenszeit (von im Mittel nur 20 Monaten) erfasst, so dass
Nadelbiographien der Symptomentwicklung erstellt wurden
Untersucht wurde, wie haufig bestimmte Symptome als Erstsymptome
auftreten, wie die durchschnittliche Verteilung der Symptome
wahrend des Alterungsverlaufs ist und welche Symptome bzw
Symptomkombinationen einen baldigen Abfall der Nadel indizieren
Dabei ergab sich keine regelmasige Reihenfolge der Symptome,
aber eine Gliederung in drei Gruppen: 1) Symptome die von Anfang
in geringer Menge vorhanden sind und spater wieder verschwinden,
2) Symptome, die von Anfang an reichlich vorhanden sind und bis
zum Nadelfall erhalten bleiben, und 3) Symptome, die erst nach
einigen Monaten auftreten und ebenfalls nicht wieder
verschwinden Die moglichen Ursachen fur die Symptomabfolgen und
fruhen Nadelfall werden diskutiert Durch die Auswertung der
klimatologischen und lufthygienischen Daten, die vom
Untersuchungsstandort zur Verfugung standen, wurde
wahrscheinlich gemacht, dass sich hohe Sommertemperaturen,
Schwefeldioxid und Ozon an der Ausbildung der Symptome
beteiligen In welchem Umfange Klima- und Immissionsbedingungen
bzw die regulare Seneszenz Ursachen fur die Symptomausbildung
sind konnte nicht differenziert werden Es scheint, dass es
prinzipiell moglich ist, eine quantitative Analyse von
Nadelsymptomen der Kiefer in situ zur Bioindikation zu nutzen
Dabei handelt es sich aber um ein aufwandiges Verfahren, das
umso aussichtsreicher ist, je starker ein bestimmter Schadstoff
dominiert
