Dimethyl sulfoxide interferes with in vitro differentiation of chick embryo endochondral chondrocytes
TL;DR: The continuous presence of 180 mM dimethyl sulfoxide during the culture specifically inhibited synthesis of type X collagen and accumulation of its RNA and the synthesis of the cartilage-specific type II collagen and the level of its mRNA were essentially unchanged in treated and control untreated cells.

Forced chondrocyte expression of sonic hedgehog impairs joint formation affecting proliferation and apoptosis.
Sara Tavella,Roberta Biticchi,Roy Morello,Patrizio Castagnola,V. Musante,Delfina Costa,Ranieri Cancedda,Silvio Garofalo +7 more
TL;DR: Results suggest that misexpression of Sonic Hedgehog causes apoptosis and proliferation defects leading to the lack of joint cavity and fusion of selected limb skeletal elements.

Identification of a novel set of genes reflecting different in vivo invasive patterns of human GBM cells.
Massimiliano Monticone,Antonio Daga,Simona Candiani,Francesco Romeo,Valentina Mirisola,Silvia Viaggi,Ilaria Melloni,Simona Pedemonte,Gianluigi Zona,W. Giaretti,Ulrich Pfeffer,Patrizio Castagnola +11 more
TL;DR: This study suggests the participation in the diffuse infiltrative/invasive process of GBM cells within the CNS of a novel set of genes coding for membrane-associated proteins, which should be thus susceptible to an inhibition strategy by specific targeting.

Monoclonal Antibodies Against Two Epitopes in the Human α1(IX) Collagen Chain
Matthew L. Warman,Tomoatsu Kimura,Yasuteru Muragaki,Patrizio Castagnola,Hironori Tamei,Kazushi Iwata,Bjorn R. Olsen +6 more
TL;DR: The preparation and use of two monoclonal antibodies which recognize peptide sequences within the human cartilage alpha 1 (IX) collagen chain are described and it is anticipated that these antibodies may be valuable tools in the study of human and other mammalian chondrodysplasias.

Distinctive chromosomal instability patterns in oral verrucous and squamous cell carcinomas detected by high-resolution DNA flow cytometry
MSci Monica Pentenero Dds,Alessandra Donadini,Emanuela Di Nallo,Massimo E. Maffei,Roberto Marino,Ubaldo Familiari,Roberto Broccoletti,Patrizio Castagnola,Sergio Gandolfo,Walter Giaretti +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether OVCs and OSCCs were characterized by differences in CIN biomarkers and found that OVC are characterized by a lower degree of CIN and tumor heterogeneity than OSCC, such that they appear as frozen in an early stage of DNA near-diploid aneuploidy.
