The aim of this study is to assess dental students’ opinions of the dentists’ role in primary prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oral cancer using a cross-sectional web-based survey. A questionnaire, containing questions about knowledge of HPV and oral cancer, confidence in head and neck examination and role of the dentist in preventing HPV-related oral cancer, was sent to all students of the Academic Centre of Dentistry Amsterdam (n = 912). One hundred and twenty-six (n = 126) students completed the questionnaire. Significantly, more master students (75%) than bachelor students (54.3%) were aware that HPV is a causative factor for oral cancer. Master students had more knowledge of HPV than bachelor students, but knowledge about HPV vaccination was irrespective of the study phase. The majority of dental students agreed that it is important to discuss HPV vaccination with patients. Eighty-nine percent of the students think that more education about symptoms of oral cancer will increase screening for oral cancer. Development of a protocol for screening in dental practices was considered even more important. According to dental students, dentists should discuss HPV as a risk factor for oral cancer with patients. Future dentists are willing to be involved in both primary and secondary prevention of HPV-related oral cancer. Therefore, screening for oral cancer and education about HPV vaccination should be integral elements of the dental curriculum.

The value of health awareness days, weeks and months: A systematic review.

The "Cochrane Corner" is a section in the journal that highlights systematic reviews relevant to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, with invited commentary to aid clinical decision making. This installment features a Cochrane Review on tonsillectomy for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (oSDB) in children, which finds moderate-quality evidence that surgery improves symptoms, behavior, and quality of life compared to nonsurgical management. The results apply to nonsyndromic children with SDB confirmed by polysomnography and must be balanced against a favorable natural history in many cases.

Cochrane Corner: Extracts from The Cochrane Library: Tonsillectomy or Adenotonsillectomy versus Non-Surgical Management for Obstructive Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children.

Objetivo: Identificar, na literatura, as estrategias de ensino para a pratica de cuidado em oncologia nos cursos de graduacao da area da saude. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisao integrativa nas bases de dados: LILACS; BDENF; MEDLINE; CINAHL e Web of Science, publicados no periodo de 2014 a 2020. Utilizou-se os descritores: Ciencias da Saude; Oncologia; Avaliacao do Ensino e Universidades (Pesquisados no DeCS). Education, Graduate; Oncology and Universities (Pesquisados no MESH). 11 estudos compuseram o escopo da presente revisao. Resultados: Identificou-se 08 estrategias de ensino-aprendizagem, sao elas: aulas teoricas e praticas; formacao complementar atraves de cursos e disciplinas eletivas; uso de metodologias ativas atraves da discussao de casos, seminarios e atividades educativas junto a populacao; e ligas academicas. Quanto as estrategias de ensino voltadas aos principios e diretrizes da Politica Nacional para a Prevencao e Controle do Câncer na Rede de Atencao a Saude, identificou-se as abordagens de: Promocao da saude, prevencao e diagnostico do câncer; tratamento e cuidados paliativos. Destaca-se que nao se identificou estrategias de ensino voltadas as acoes de deteccao precoce, vigilância, monitoramento e avaliacao. Conclusao: Salienta-se a necessidade de mais estudos na area, com o objetivo de promover a discussao de estrategias de ensino nos cursos de graduacao da saude que atendam aos principios e diretrizes da Politica Nacional para a Prevencao e Controle do Câncer na Rede de Atencao a Saude das Pessoas com Doencas Cronicas no âmbito do Sistema Unico de Saude (SUS).

Formação para a prática de cuidado em oncologia nos cursos de ciências da saúde: revisão integrativa

Medical school curricular hours dedicated to ophthalmology are low and declining. Extracurricular ophthalmology activities, such as participation in community vision screenings, may serve an important adjunctive role in medical school curricula. The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Vision Screening In Our Neighborhoods (ViSION) Program is an example of a voluntary medical student-directed community service-learning program.We used a mixed-methods cross-sectional approach, including an online survey and semi-structured interviews. JHU School of Medicine students enrolled in MD or MD/PhD programs during the 2019-2020 academic year were surveyed regarding demographics, career and service interests, involvement in ophthalmology-related activities, and confidence in their ophthalmology-related skills. Survey responses were compared between ViSION volunteers and non-volunteers using Fisher's exact chi-square tests. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via webconference with 8 prior or current ViSION volunteers and responses analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Data were collected when ViSION volunteers were in variable stages of their medical education and involvement with the ViSION program.A total of 118 medical students were included, representing an overall response rate of 24.6% of JHU medical students. ViSION volunteers reported greater involvement in ophthalmology-related research (42% vs. 4%, p < 0.001), intent to apply to ophthalmology residency programs (35% vs. 1%, p = 0.001), and confidence with multiple ophthalmology knowledge and clinical skill domains. In particular, ViSION volunteers were more likely to feel confident estimating cup-to-disc ratio using direct ophthalmoscopy (20% vs. 0%, p < 0.001). In open-ended survey and interview questions, most volunteers attributed at least some degree of their ophthalmology skill development and desire to pursue ophthalmology and public health careers to their ViSION experience.Medical students who volunteered with a student-led community vision screening program were more likely to have a prior interest in ophthalmology than those who did not volunteer, but only 1/3 of volunteers planned to pursue a career in ophthalmology. Overall, volunteers reported higher confidence performing ophthalmology-related clinical skills, suggesting that student-led community vision screening programs may provide an important avenue for medical students to explore public health aspects of ophthalmology, while practicing ophthalmology exam skills and learning about common ophthalmic pathologies, regardless of their career intentions.
