A drive system for providing ac drive power to an induction machine with asymmetrical rotor resistance and for sensorless rotor tracking of the induction machine includes: a signal injector for determining a stator command signal in a reference frame which is aligned with either an estimated rotor reference frame; a signal determiner for determining a feedback stator signal of the induction machine in a stator reference frame; and a rotor position and velocity tracker for using the feedback stator signal to estimate a rotor velocity and position by transforming the feedback stator signal into an orthogonal axis feedback stator signal in the estimated rotor reference frame, isolating a component of the orthogonal axis feedback stator signal which is in-phase with the injected stator command signals, filtering the isolated component to isolate an error term, and generating a position estimate by driving the isolated error term towards zero. In several related embodiments a flux axis stator command signal is injected into the drive system and flux axis and torque axis stator feedback signals are then used for rotor position and velocity tracking.

Sensorless rotor tracking of induction machines with asymmetrical rotor resistance

Power is provided to the stator windings of an AC machine which includes a component at the fundamental drive frequency for the machine and a superimposed signal component which is at a substantially higher frequency than the drive power. The rotor has saliencies which result in a change in impedance as seen at the stator windings to the high frequency excitation signal as a periodic function of rotor rotational position. Such saliencies are inherent in some permanent magnet synchronous and all synchronous reluctance machines, and may be provided by appropriate modification of the rotor of induction machines. The stator response at the signal frequency is then detected to provide a correlation between the response at the signal frequency and the rotor position. The detection of the response at the signal frequency is preferably carried out by a heterodyne detection process, by mixing signals at the signal frequency with the measured stator currents, and filtering the mixed signals to isolate the signal indicative of the rotor position. Conventional squirrel cage induction motors can be provided with sufficient spatial variations in the stator winding impedance as a function of rotor position in various ways, including varying the depth and/or width of the slots over the rotor conductive bars, by varying the cross-section of the bars, or by filling or partially filling some of the slots.

Method and apparatus for transducerless flux estimation in drives for induction machines

This paper explores the tracking of high-frequency magnetic saliencies created by saturation as a means of continu- ously estimating the position and magnitude of Aux for transduc- erless field oriented control at zero and low frequency operation. Tracking is based upon inverter-generated high-frequency signal injection with demodulation incorporating heterodyning and a closed-loop tracking filter. Integration of the tracking scheme with the voltage model in a closed-loop flux observer topol- ogy is proposed as an attractive means of achieving very wide speed range transducerless field oriented control. The focus is toward induction machines, although the applicability to surface- mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines is also briefly discussed. Experimental evaluation of saturation effects in two induction machines is included, as well as simulation results demonstrating sustained torque control at zero fundamental fre- quency.
