During the last decade, a big progress has been achieved in the analysis and numerical treatment of Initial Value Problems (IVPs) in Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs) and Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). In spite of the rich variety of results available in the literature, there are still many specific problems that require special attention. Two of such, which are considered in this work, are the optimization of order of accuracy and reduction of cost of functional evaluations of Explicit Runge - Kutta (ERK) methods.

In 1999, Goeken presented an s-stage ERK Method of order p(s)=s +1,s>2.
However, this work focuses on the design of a new approximation algorithm that reduces the cost of functional evaluations and yet increases the attainable order higher 
U n and Jonhson [94]; and the classical ERK methods. The order p of 
the new scheme called Multiderivative Explicit Runge-Kutta (MERK) Methods is such that p(s) 2. The stability, convergence and implementation for the optimization of IVPs in DAEs and ODEs systems are also considered.

Simulation Based Design for Adaptive Multi-agent Systems: Extension to the ADELFE Methdology

Current space developments rely heavily on engineering and manage ment automation tools such as computer aided design software, finite element analysis, product lifecycle management software, virtual prototyping, and material resource planning. Virtual Product Development tools now allow design decisions to be made base d on accurate physics -based simulations with parametric trade -offs. These tools are constantly evolving and bring their own risks and benefits depending on the application. This paper proposes a framework for programs and companies to model, define, and m easure the maturity of their Virtual Product Development Process. This framework, called the Virtual Product Development Maturity Model (VPDMM), distinguishes between five levels of maturity in the use of design automation tools and their application to de sign, engineering analysis, manufacturing, and data sharing. The characterization of each maturity level is defined within the areas of data, tools, people, and design processes. This model is particularly important for space missions and programs becaus e of the unique nature of space systems and the difficulty in using physical tests to explore the design space. The paper illustrates a systematic application of the model for the best practice of determining the cost of complex space system developments.

Virtual Product Development Cost Assessment Model for Space Systems

The development, integration, test, and deployment of large space systems has grown increasingly complex. Simulation of specific critical events such as rendezvous/docking, deployments, separations, pointing and station keeping has been possible for some time and can be used for design decisions and operations planning. An emerging technology in space systems is the simulation of entire systems during the design process. Now a whole array of design and operational decisions can be made based on an integrated simulation model before the hardware has been built. The fidelity and complexity of this simulation model has increased to match the complexity of the systems that engineers are creating.

This paper describes the latest developments in simulation technology to support simulation based design decisions for space systems. These developments are moving the simulation industry beyond parametric based analysis to template based design, complete integrated design process flow, and multidisciplinary design tradeoffs and optimization.

The particular issues for simulation based design that impact the space system industry are addressed. These issues include proof of accuracy, parametric based exploration, interdisciplinary model integration, modeling of innovative systems. Examples are given from industry to illustrate the extent that simulation tools are now affecting the space system design process and how these models can be used to make operational decisions.
