The patent describes a method and apparatus for securely distributing an initial Data Encryption Algorithm (DEA) key-encrypting key by encrypting a key record (consisting of the key-encrypting key and control information associated with that key-encrypting key) using a public key algorithm and a public key belonging to the intended recipient of the key record. The patent further describes a method and apparatus for securely recovering the distributed key-encrypting key by the recipient by decrypting the received key record using the same public key algorithm and private key associated with the public key and re-encrypting the key-encrypting key under a key formed by arithmetically combining the recipient's master key with a control vector contained in the control information of the received key record. Thus the type and usage attributes assigned by the originator of the key-encrypting key in the form of a control vector are cryptographically coupled to the key-encrypting key such that the recipient may only use the received key-encrypting key in a manner defined by the key originator. The patent further describes a method and apparatus to improve the integrity of the key distribution process by applying a digital signature to the key record and by including identifying information (i.e., an originator identifier) in the control information of the key record. The integrity of the distribution process is enhanced by verifying the digital signature and originator identifier at the recipient node.

An open network system for supporting input/output (I/O) operations for non-standard I/O devices are disclosed. The system includes a server coupled to a plurality of I/O devices through an open network and an extended open system protocol that supports communication with devices that are not personal computers (PCs). These devices include magnetic stripe readers, check readers, smart card readers, credit card terminals, screen phone terminals, PIN pads, printers, and the like. The extended open network protocol includes tags which identify device and input operations and attributes which identify the location, data exchange method, and data variable names for the retrieval, acquisition, and submission of data between the server and I/O devices. Preferably, the open network protocol is implemented in a Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP).

The secure memory device features a dual authentication protocol in which the memory and host authenticate each other. The secure memory device also includes an encrypted password feature, as well as using stream encryption to encrypt the data.

When transferring data, an electronic document or the like from a first computer system (100) to a second computer system (200) via a data transmission line (300), e.g. a public data transmission line, a first output and input station (122) comprising a first electronic card (124) and a second output and input station (222) comprising a second electronic card (224) are used. The data is transferred to the first electronic card (124) from the first computer system (100) via the first station (122) and is encrypted in the first electronic card (124), whereupon the data is output from the first electronic card (124) in encrypted form and transferred via the first station (122) to the first computer system (100) and therefrom to the data transmission line (300). The data is received by the other computer system (200) in encrypted form and is transferred to the second electronic card (224) via the second station (222), whereupon the data is decrypted in the second electronic card (224) and is output from the second electronic card via the second station (222) to the second computer system (200). As the data transfer between the first and the second computer system is carried out between the first and the second electronic card, no third parties have neither authorized or unauthorized possibility of interfering with the data transmission and possibly changing the data or the electronic document. The first and second electronic card (124, 224) constitute a coherent set of cards comprising coherent encryption/decryption keys input into the internal storages of the cards.

A requested cryptographic function is validated for performance in conjunction with a cryptographic key, by inputting a first portion of an associated control vector into a first control vector checker, which outputs a first authorization signal if the requested cryptographic function has been authorized by the originator of the key. A second portion of the control vector is input to a second control vector checker, which outputs a second authorization signal if the requested cryptographic function has been authorized by the originator of the key. Both the first and the second authorization signals are applied to a cryptographic processor which initiates the execution of the requested cryptographic function.
