This study focuses on the managerial issue of should social enterprises (SEs) become more marketing oriented. It adapts the Kohli et al. (J Mark Res 30:467–477, 1993) MARKOR marketing orientation scale to measure the adoption of marketing by SEs. The items capture Vincentian-based values to leverage business in service to the poor as a measure of a Vincentian marketing orientation (VMO). A VMO is an organisational wide value-driven philosophy of management that focuses a SE on meeting its objectives by adopting a more marketing orientated approach to serve the needy and poor in a just and sustainable manner. SEs that exhibit a VMO seek to understand and respond to both the needs of their beneficiaries and stakeholders. They are constantly generating, disseminating, and responding to environmental, beneficiary, and stakeholder information and develop their business propositions to more effectively and efficiently meet the needs of the poor, while guided by a philosophy of leveraging business for social good. This study of SEs in Australia found that a VMO is strongly and positively correlated with social, economic, and environmental performance. These findings suggest that SEs may benefit by leveraging marketing capabilities to better serve their beneficiaries and stakeholders.

Social Enterprises and the Performance Advantages of a Vincentian Marketing Orientation

The study of the specific problems of insurance ethics remains relatively undeveloped, either from sociological or business ethical perspectives. More recently, sociologists and socio-legal scholars have given a sustained new wave of attention to insurance (see, e.g., Baker and Simon 2002; Baker 2010; Ericson et al. 2003; Doyle and Ericson 2010) while the particular problems of insurance ethics have also received fresh scrutiny (see, e.g., Flanagan et al. 2007). These disciplinary approaches begin to meet in the collection of articles in this special issue, which examine diverse contexts and dimensions of insurance business ethics at both empirical and normative levels. Insurance arrangements are very important to consider from an ethical perspective, as they not only reconfigure risk but also reshape ethical responsibilities (Baker 2002; Brinkmann 2005). As Turo-Kimmo Lehtonen and Jyrri Liukko explore in their article in this special issue, private insurance creates an important kind of social solidarity among those in the risk pool, although this solidarity is not necessarily evident to or understood by the insured; such solidarity was perhaps clearer to participants in early forms of insurance featuring small pools of people in relatively closely knit communities sharing risks, compared to the much vaster and more institutionally complex forms that insurance often takes today. Yet, insurance remains a crucial element of the contemporary social fabric, though this may be taken for granted by many, and is perhaps most evident to those who cannot afford adequate coverage. Indeed, micro-insurance in developing countries, as discussed by Ralf Radermacher and Johannes Brinkmann in their article, represents something of a return to the historical communitarian roots of insurance. On the other hand, several of the articles in this volume might be seen as beginning to suggest that the core values that were more easily evident in early, simpler forms of insurance may have sometimes become corroded as a result of the contemporary ways in which insurance is now organized. For example, Bill Lesch and Johannes Brinkmann raise important questions in their article about the responsibility of insurers as co-contributors to problems of insurance fraud. It is also important to note also that insurance ethics is not just about insurance: insurance also governs (Ericson et al. 2003) and reshapes responsibility among insured individuals and organizations in a huge variety of other social and institutional settings, for example, playing a crucial role in the evolution and direction of tort law as Christian Lahnstein argues in his piece, or facilitating risky technological megaprojects like the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon oil venture in the Gulf of Mexico, as Alexandros Kyrtsis examines in his article. Gathered at the world headquarters of Munich Re, near the famous English Gardens in Munich, for 2 days in February 2011, a small and interdisciplinary group of academics and insurance professionals from seven countries grappled with ethical questions in diverse contexts of the world of insurance. The articles that make up this special issue were all presented at that workshop. The remainder of this short introduction gives a quick overview of the issues that are addressed in each article, and then briefly ends with a call for dialog and future work to start to distill more general principles of insurance business ethics. Previous research on consumers’ willingness to choose a green hotel has yielded mixed results, with some studies indicating a positive relationship with the hotel’s CSR initiatives, while others suggesting that there is no booking advantage for hotels going green. The present research seeks to understand the social nature of green hotel booking decisions and proposes a conceptual framework elucidating three primary factors that underlie consumers’ propensity to choose a green hotel. The study findings indicate that, importantly, a consumer’s social relationship situation (social inclusion vs. social exclusion) with other consumers, self-affirmation (self-value/self-concept reinforcement), and the option popularity jointly influence consumers’ willingness to choose a green hotel. The authors adopt a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial experimental design to test the proposed hypotheses. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

The Impact of Option Popularity, Social Inclusion/Exclusion, and Self-affirmation on Consumers’ Propensity to Choose Green Hotels

OBJECTIVES: Medical leaders are facing leadership challenges that ask for a leadership style that takes care of both themselves and their coworkers. Mindfulness may support this leadership style. We explored how a 'Mindful leadership for medical specialists' course affected medical specialists' leadership. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews. The grounded theory method was used to analyse the data. SETTING: A university medical centre in the Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen medical specialists (six male) with an average age of 51 years (ranging from 40 to 66 years). INTERVENTIONS: The mindful leadership course consisted of 10-weekly 5-hour sessions that focused on cultivating mindfulness and compassion. In addition, sessions included didactic and interactional teaching about leadership theories. RESULTS: Four categories emerged from the data: (A) Self - Attitude: psychological attitude towards self, (B) Self - Behaviour: behaviour towards self, (C) Other - Attitude: psychological attitude towards others, and (D) Other - Behaviour: behaviour towards others. Themes were defined within these categories: awareness of self, open mind, insight and appreciation of self (A), emotional and cognitive self-regulation, letting go of unhelpful behaviour and developing helpful behaviour (B), differences in attitude to others such as awareness of (impact on) others, keeping an open mind about others, allowing difficult emotions associated with others, appreciating of others (C), and communicating more effectively, providing direction, empowering and caring for others (D). CONCLUSIONS: The results help us understand the core elements of mindful leadership, both with respect to one's psychological attitude and behaviour towards oneself and others. More research on mindful leadership and the effects on self and others is needed. Mindful leadership courses could be a valuable part of clinical training and might contribute to more sustainable healthcare organisations.

Vincent DePaul is hailed as the Roman Catholic Church’s ‘‘patron saint of charity,’’ but what he did was more than mobilize charity; he matched it with justice.
