Parental drinking problem can directly effect on their children. For this reason, children of alcoholics (COAs) tend to show negative outcomes while they are growing up, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, substance abuse or interpersonal difficulties. However, there are several factors that effect on COAs that minimize or maximize the impact of adverse experiences related to their parental drinking problem, and it is important to understand those factors to prevent or minimize the negative outcomes in COAs. Thus, this study examined both risk and protective factors of COAs, which affect their adverse outcomes. A systematic review was conducted by following PRISMA statement. Three databases—PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO—were searched, and total 39 articles were found and discussed. This study identified risk, protective, and biological factors in COAs, and categorized into four levels: individual, parental, familial and social. Each level contains specific factors that positively or negatively affect the development in COAs. In addition, biological differences between COAs and non-COAs and between resilient COAs and vulnerable COAs were discussed. Findings from this study should be applied to COAs and adult COAs through evidence-based interventions in order to help them in terms of preventing or minimizing the negative outcomes they might experience in their lives.

A Systematic Review of Research on Children of Alcoholics: Their Inherent Resilience and Vulnerability

Although guilt and shame, on one hand, and spirituality, on the other, are known to relate to recovery from substance abuse, the connectedness of these emotions, spirituality, and recovery has hardly been touched in research. This study, drawing from rich qualitative data consisting of the interviews of 21 former substance abusers, each interviewed twice, targets this relationship and analyses how spirituality, in this case more precisely Christian faith, relates to guilt and shame during the process of recovery. Since self-conscious emotions are at least in part socioculturally constructed, Christian faith is seen as a cultural tool that is influencing the ways how to define and cope with guilt and shame in recovery. Both academic and practical conclusions are drawn from the data.

ing Core Ideas After the domain-categorized transcripts for each participant had been developed, the primary team members independently reviewed the raw data from three participants and abstracted or summarized them into core ideas within the respective domains. Core ideas are a summarization of participant data into concise and clear prose. Core ideas were summarized without reference to interpretation or inference. Instead, the summarizations were based on transcript evidence and the context of the given domain. The primary team members arrived at a consensus of the core ideas for the first three participant cases. As the core ideas for these three participants were reviewed and discussed, they were recategorized to different domains as the consensus determined it necessary. Once a common understanding of the core idea process was established, one team member reviewed the remaining domain categorized transcripts and identified core ideas. A second team member then reviewed the first team member’s core idea summarizations. The team then discussed and resolved all discrepancies, arriving at a final list of core ideas for each domain.

This study examined whether disharmony within one's family of origin is a risk factor for the children of problem drinkers in adult life. The responses to a postal questionnaire of 39 adults who experienced difficulties in childhood around parental drinking were assessed for any associations that existed between their remembering disharmony (between their parents, between their parents and themselves, and within the family generally) in their childhood and their current experience of shame as measured by the Experience of Shame Scale (Andrews, Qian, & Valentine, British Journal of Clinical Psychology, 2002, 41, 29–42). Shame vulnerability was therefore assumed to be representative of adult distress.
