Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result, the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented.

Developing serious games for cultural heritage: a state-of-the-art review

As a collective and highly dynamic social group, the human crowd is a fascinating phenomenon that has been frequently studied by experts from various areas. Recently, computer-based modeling and simulation technologies have emerged to support investigation of the dynamics of crowds, such as a crowd's behaviors under normal and emergent situations. This article assesses the major existing technologies for crowd modeling and simulation. We first propose a two-dimensional categorization mechanism to classify existing work depending on the size of crowds and the time-scale of the crowd phenomena of interest. Four evaluation criteria have also been introduced to evaluate existing crowd simulation systems from the point of view of both a modeler and an end-user.We have discussed some influential existing work in crowd modeling and simulation regarding their major features, performance as well as the technologies used in this work. We have also discussed some open problems in the area. This article will provide the researchers with useful information and insights on the state of the art of the technologies in crowd modeling and simulation as well as future research directions.

Review of built heritage modelling: Integration of HBIM and other information techniques

Serious games present a promising opportunity for learning, but the genre still lacks methodologies and tools for efficient and low-cost production, particularly for teacher and domain experts This article gives an authoring framework that aims to provide structured support, from content design to final implementation In particular, we have abstracted a conceptual model—the SandBox Serious Game - which relies on a generalization of task-based learning theory The model invites players to perform cognitive tasks contextually while exploring information-rich virtual environments We consider it particularly suited for cultural heritage entertainment applications The model defines games that are set in realistic virtual worlds enriched with embedded educational tasks, which we have implemented as minigames This approach simplifies the authoring work, which can easily be supported by visual authoring tools for ontology-based urban 3D modeling and implementation tasks, thus allowing an approach similar to the mind-maps concept We propose a top-down methodology for content preparation, starting from a city-level analysis down to the single points of interest and associated tasks, which are instances of simple predefined minigame/quiz typologies We provide examples and discuss criteria for selecting task typologies according to the authors' cognitive targets Finally, we discuss the results of a user test, which took place in a lab, aimed at verifying the acquisition of cultural heritage knowledge in a pleasant and engaging way Games appear particularly suited for supporting the study of images, especially of iconography Compared to reading text, a game forces the player to focus more strongly on problems, which favors knowledge acquisition and retention Learning complex concepts requires an investigative attitude, which can be spurred by well-designed games Good design involves usability, graphic appeal, appropriate content, and the presence of connections which a player must discover in the content Players should be asked to pay attention to and reason about their whole game activity - including the relationships between the game content, the brief introduction, and concluding texts More comprehensive tests are needed to better investigate the educational effectiveness—however, the first results are promising, especially in terms of user motivation and creation of new opportunities for learning about CH

3D reconstruction and validation of historical background for immersive VR applications and games: The case study of the Forum of Augustus in Rome

Rome Reborn is a virtual reconstruction of the entire city of ancient Rome at the height of its urban development in 320 AD. The model consists of two kinds of digital reconstructions: Class I elements (whose position, identification, and design are known with great accuracy); and Class II elements (whose building type and location are known only in a general way). Within the Aurelian walls, there are more than 7000 buildings. Of these, ca. 250 fall into Class I, and the rest into Class II. By their very nature, Class I elements can be digitally modeled with a high level of detail and confidence; Class II elements cannot. The challenge in modeling an entire city such as ancient Rome (and, by extension, many other sites known from incomplete archaeological data) is to harmonize the mode of representation of these two classes of buildings. This paper describes how we utilized procedural and parametric modeling techniques to create visually compelling and detailed models of the Class II elements of the digital model of ancient Rome. Procedural modeling methods made the modeling process very efficient without sacrificing detail or quality. Furthermore, the flexibility of the approach helps to quickly change and regenerate the model as new scholarship or discoveries warrant.

Rome Reborn 2.0: A Case Study of Virtual City Reconstruction Using Procedural Modeling Techniques

Pompeii was a Roman city, destroyed and completely buried during an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. We have revived its past by creating a 3D model of its previous appearance and populated it with crowds of Virtual Romans. In this paper, we detail the process, based on archaeological data, to simulate ancient Pompeii life in real time. In a first step, an annotated city model is generated using procedural modelling. These annotations contain semantic data, such as land usage, building age, and window/door labels. In a second phase, the semantics are automatically interpreted to populate the scene and trigger special behaviors in the crowd, depending on the location of the characters. Finally, we describe the system pipeline, which allows for the simulation of thousands of Virtual Romans in real time.

Applied procedural modeling

Efficient, realistic face animation is still a challenge. A system is proposed that yields realistic animations for speech. It starts from real 3D face dynamics, observed at a frame rate of 25 fps for thousands of points on the faces of speaking actors. When asked to animate a face it replicates the visemes that is has learned, and adds the necessary coarticulation effects. The speech animation could be based on as few as 16 modes, extracted through Independent Component Analysis from the observed face dynamics. Also faces for which only a static, neutral 3D model is available, can be animated. Rather then animating via verbatim copying other faces’ deformation fields, the visemes are adapted to the shape of the new face. By localising this face in a Face Space, where also the locations of the example faces are known, visemes are adapted automatically according to the relative distance with respect to these examples. The animation tool proposes a good speech-based face animation as a point of departure for animators, who also get support by the system to then make further changes as desired.
