The Botryosphaeriaceae comprises endophytes, saprobes and plant pathogens. Recently, some taxa in Botryosphaeriaceae have undergone nomenclatural changes. This paper represents the first comprehensive overview of Botryosphaeriaceae since 2013. Twenty three genera and 187 species of Botryosphaeriaceae are listed alphabetically, brief notes for species in each genus are provided. Information is provided for the location of ex-type isolates, new host records and geographical distribution of species. Available DNA sequences from ex-type isolates are listed in a table and multilocus phylogenetic trees for major genera in Botryosphaeriaceae are provided.

The potency of lemon (Citrus limon L.) essential oil to control some fungal diseases of grapevine wood.

Esca is a widespread and damaging grapevine trunk disease in France. A survey was undertaken to identify relevant cultural factors that may influence symptom severity. Preliminary observations in the Aquitaine region confirmed the complex interactions among cultivar, vine training system, and climate, so the study was expanded to the national level to help account for esca in different wine growing regions. Twenty-five vineyard plots were examined. The plots were comparable by pairs, with the same cultivar (or cultivar with similar levels of susceptibility in a few cases), with the same age and similar soil and climatic environments, but with different training or pruning systems. Esca was the predominant trunk disease and prevalence was assessed by visible symptoms on leaves and on wood. Training systems with long arms (or cordons) were generally less affected by the disease than those with short or no arms. Pruning also played a major role, with a trend of less severe symptoms associated with less pruning. The study confirmed that foliar symptoms reveal the presence of the disease, but cannot be considered a reliable indicator of the disease impact in all situations. This study also confirmed: i) that vine training and pruning options may greatly influence the severity of esca, ii) that increasing the length of cordons may minimize the consequences of the wood necroses, and, iii) that simplifications of the woody vine structure (resulting from adoption of modern training and pruning options) may have favoured the development of esca.

Several Botryosphaeriaceae species are known to occur worldwide, causing dieback, canker and fruit rot on various hosts. Surveys conducted in ten commercial citrus orchards in the northern region of Algeria revealed five species of Botryosphaeriaceae belonging to three genera associated with diseased trees. Morphological and cultural characteristics as well as phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) identified Diplodia mutila, Diplodia seriata, Dothiorella viticola, Lasiodiplodia mediterranea and a novel species which is here described as Lasiodiplodia mithidjana sp. nov.. Of these, L. mithidjana (14.1% of the samples) and L. mediterranea (13% of the samples) were the most widespread and abundant species. Pathogenicity tests revealed that L. mediterranea and D. seriata were the most aggressive species on citrus shoots. This study highlights the importance of Botryosphaeriaceae species as agents of canker and dieback of citrus trees in Algeria.

Lasiodiplodia mitidjana sp. nov. and other Botryosphaeriaceae species causing branch canker and dieback of Citrus sinensis in Algeria.

From 2012 to 2015, several field surveys were conducted throughout forest areas in the north of Iran in order to determine the occurrence of species of Botryosphaeriaceae on forest trees. Fungal isolations were made from symptomatic branches of 20 tree genera including Acer, Alnus, Carpinus, Crataegus, Cupressus, Cydonia, Diospyros, Fagus, Fraxinus, Gleditsia, Mespilus, Parrotia, Pinus, Populus, Prunus, Pterocarya, Punica, Quercus, Ulmus and Zelkova, as well as fruiting bodies formed on the surface of woody debris. Morphological identification along with molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and a partial sequence of translation elongation factor 1-α (tef-1α) gene showed that at least nine species of Botryosphaeriaceae occur on forest trees in the north of Iran. These include Dothiorella sarmentorum, Dothiorella plurivora, Neofusicoccum parvum, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae, Diplodia seriata, Diplodia sapinea, Lasiodiplodia mahajangana and Diplodia intermedia. Pathogenicity tests were conducted for selected isolates from each species on six tree species (Mespilus germanica, Punica granatum, Parrotia persica, Alnus glutinosa, Quercus castaneifolia and Pterocarya fraxinifolia) under field conditions. Results of the pathogenicity tests showed a variation in lesion lengths (virulence) and re-isolation frequencies of inoculated species on branches of trees, Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae, B. dothidea and D. intermedia being the most virulence species. Based on host plant species, the majority of Botryosphaeriaceae species are new records. This is the first comprehensive study on the species identification, distribution and pathogenicity of Botryosphaeriaceae on forest trees in Iran. This is also the first report of L. mahajangana in this country.

Diversity and pathogenicity of Botryosphaeriaceae species on forest trees in the north of Iran

Grapevine dieback is an increasing problem in grape vineyards in Algeria. We conducted field surveys each spring between 2006 and 2012 to determine the fungal pathogens associated with grapevine decline in various grape-growing regions. We isolated and identified 3 species of Botryosphaeriaceae (Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diplodia seriata, and Neofusicoccum parvum) from infected wood using a combination of morphological and cultural characters, as well as phylogenetic analyses of ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and fruiting body. We identified 20 isolates of Diplodia seriata, 13 isolates of Botryosphaeria dothidea, and 7 isolates of Neofusicoccum parvum. Inoculation of grapevine plantlets with the 3 Botryosphaeriaceae species produced necrosis and vascular lesions in the wood after a 6-week incubation; Neofusicoccum parvum isolates were the most virulent, followed by D. seriata and B. dothidea. All 3 species were re-isolated from lesions on infected plantlets. Our results represent the first report of a canker disease of grapevine associated with species of the Botryosphaeriaceae in Algeria.
