The proliferation of social media enables people to express their opinions widely online. However, at the same time, this has resulted in the emergence of conflict and hate, making online environments uninviting for users. Although researchers have found that hate is a problem across multiple platforms, there is a lack of models for online hate detection using multi-platform data. To address this research gap, we collect a total of 197,566 comments from four platforms: YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, and Twitter, with 80% of the comments labeled as non-hateful and the remaining 20% labeled as hateful. We then experiment with several classification algorithms (Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines, XGBoost, and Neural Networks) and feature representations (Bag-of-Words, TF-IDF, Word2Vec, BERT, and their combination). While all the models significantly outperform the keyword-based baseline classifier, XGBoost using all features performs the best (F1 = 0.92). Feature importance analysis indicates that BERT features are the most impactful for the predictions. Findings support the generalizability of the best model, as the platform-specific results from Twitter and Wikipedia are comparable to their respective source papers. We make our code publicly available for application in real software systems as well as for further development by online hate researchers.

Developing an online hate classifier for multiple social media platforms

In the modern era, the cyberbullying (CB) is an intentional and aggressive action of an individual or a group against a victim via electronic media. The consequence of CB is increasing alarmingly, affecting the victim either physically or psychologically. This allows the use of automated detection tools, but research on such automated tools is limited due to poor datasets or elimination of wide features during the CB detection. In this paper, an integrated model is proposed that combines both the feature extraction engine and classification engine from the input raw text datasets from a social media engine. The feature extraction engine extracts the psychological features, user comments, and the context into consideration for CB detection. The classification engine using artificial neural network (ANN) classifies the results, and it is provided with an evaluation system that either rewards or penalizes the classified output. The evaluation is carried out using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) that improves the performance of classification. The simulation is carried out to validate the efficacy of the ANN-DRL model against various metrics that include accuracy, precision, recall, and f-measure. The results of the simulation show that the ANN-DRL has higher classification results than conventional machine learning classifiers.

Nature-Inspired-Based Approach for Automated Cyberbullying Classification on Multimedia Social Networking

In recent years, unethical behavior in the cyber-environment has been revealed. The presence of offensive language on social media platforms and automatic detection of such language is becoming a major challenge in modern society. The complexity of natural language constructs makes this task even more challenging. Until now, most of the research has focused on resource-rich languages like English. Roman Urdu and Urdu are two scripts of writing the Urdu language on social media. The Roman script uses the English language characters while the Urdu script uses Urdu language characters. Urdu and Hindi languages are similar with the only difference in their writing script but the Roman scripts of both languages are similar. This study is about the detection of offensive language from the user's comments presented in a resource-poor language Urdu. We propose the first offensive dataset of Urdu containing user-generated comments from social media. We use individual and combined n-grams techniques to extract features at character-level and word-level. We apply seventeen classifiers from seven machine learning techniques to detect offensive language from both Urdu and Roman Urdu text comments. Experiments show that the regression-based models using character n-grams show superior performance to process the Urdu language. Character-level tri-gram outperforms the other word and character n-grams. LogitBoost and SimpleLogistic outperform the other models and achieve 99.2% and 95.9% values of F-measure on Roman Urdu and Urdu datasets respectively. Our designed dataset is publically available on GitHub for future research.

Automatic Detection of Offensive Language for Urdu and Roman Urdu

Sarcasm is a form of sentiment whereby people express the implicit information, usually the opposite of the message content in order to hurt someone emotionally or criticise something in a humorous way. Sarcasm identification in textual data, being one of the hardest challenges in natural language processing (NLP), has recently become an interesting research area due to its importance in improving the sentiment analysis of social media data. A few studies have carried out a comprehensive literature review on sarcasm identification in the existing primary study within the last 11 years. Thus, this study carried out a review on the classification techniques for sarcasm identification under the aspects of datasets, pre-processing, feature engineering, classification algorithms, and performance metrics. The study has considered the published article from the period of 2008 to 2019. Forty (40) academic literature were selected from the 7 standard academic databases in order to carry out the review and realize the objectives. The study revealed that most researchers created their own datasets since there is no standard available datasets in the domain of sarcasm identification. Context and content-based linguistic features were used in most of the studies. This review shows that n-gram and parts of speech tagging techniques were the most commonly used feature extraction techniques. However, binary representation and term frequency were utilized for feature representation whereas Chi squared and information gain were used for the feature selection scheme. Moreover, classification algorithm such as support vector machine, Naive Bayes, random forest, maximum entropy, and decision tree algorithm were mostly applied using accuracy, precision, recall and F-measure for performance measures. Finally, research challenges and future direction are summarized in this review. This review reveals the impact of sarcasm identification in building effective product reviews and would serve as handle resources for researchers and practitioners in sarcasm identification and text classification in general.

Sarcasm identification in textual data: systematic review, research challenges and open directions

This article aims to summarize the recent advancement in the fake account detection methodology on social networking websites. Over the past decade, social networking websites have received huge attention from users all around the world. As a result, popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and others saw an unexpected rise in registered users. However, researchers claim that all registered accounts are not real; many of them are fake and created for specific purposes. The primary purpose of fake accounts is to spread spam content, rumor, and other unauthentic messages on the platform. Hence, it is needed to filter out the fake accounts, but it has many challenges. In the past few years, researchers applied many advanced technologies to identify fake accounts. In the survey presented in this article, we summarize the recent development of fake account detection technologies. We discuss the challenges and limitations of the existing models in brief. The survey may help future researchers to identify the gaps in the current literature and develop a generalized framework for fake profile detection on social networking websites.

Fake Profile Detection on Social Networking Websites: A Comprehensive Review

Abusive text (indiscriminate slang, abusive language, and profanity) on the Internet is not just a message but rather a tool for very serious and brutal cyber violence. It has become an important problem to devise a method for detecting and preventing abusive text online. However, the intentional obfuscation of words and phrases makes this task very difficult and challenging. We design a decision system that successfully detects (obfuscated) abusive text using an unsupervised learning of abusive words based on word2vec's skip-gram and the cosine similarity. The system also deploys several efficient gadgets for filtering abusive text such as blacklists, n-grams, edit-distance metrics, mixed languages, abbreviations, punctuation, and words with special characters to detect the intentional obfuscation of abusive words. We integrate both an unsupervised learning method and efficient gadgets into a single system that enhances abusive and non-abusive word lists. The integrated decision system based on the enhanced word lists shows a precision of 94.08%, a recall of 80.79%, and an f-score of 86.93% in malicious word detection for news article comments, a precision of 89.97%, a recall of 80.55%, and an f-score 85.00% for online community comments, and a precision of 90.65%, a recall of 93.57%, and an f-score 92.09% for Twitter tweets. We expect that our approach can help to improve the current abusive word detection system, which is crucial for several web-based services including social networking services and online games.

An abusive text detection system based on enhanced abusive and non-abusive word lists

We continue the study of generating se-mantically correct regular expressions from natural language descriptions (NL). The current state-of-the-art model SemRegex produces regular expressions from NLs by rewarding the reinforced learning based on the semantic (rather than syntactic) equivalence between two regular expressions. Since the regular expression equivalence problem is PSPACE-complete, we introduce the EQ_Reg model for computing the simi-larity of two regular expressions using deep neural networks. Our EQ_Reg mod-el essentially softens the equivalence of two regular expressions when used as a reward function. We then propose a new regex generation model, SoftRegex, us-ing the EQ_Reg model, and empirically demonstrate that SoftRegex substantially reduces the training time (by a factor of at least 3.6) and produces state-of-the-art results on three benchmark datasets.

The apparatus includes: a text acquisition unit that obtains a plurality of self-replicating texts generated in a self-replicating manner by using texts for learning having been verified in advance for ethical or unethical properties; a dictionary-based discrimination unit that receives the self-proliferation text and searches for words similar to the profanity registered in the profanity dictionary obtained in advance from the approved self-replicating text and a pre-determined level or higher, and determines unethical properties of the self-replicating text; a learning model-based discrimination unit that receives the self-replicating text, vectorizes the text in units of words, and extracts sentence feature vectors from the vectorized words according to a previously learned pattern estimation method to determine the unethical properties of the self-replicating text; an original text-based discrimination unit that searches for text for learning most similar to the text for self-replicating, and determines the unethical properties of the text for self-replicating according to the label of the searched text for learning; and a discrimination result comparison unit that obtains the final discrimination result for the self-replicating text by combining the discrimination result of the unethical properties of the self-replicating text determined by each of the dictionary-based discrimination unit, the learning model-based discrimination unit, and the original text-based discrimination unit.
