Energetic materials comprise both explosives and propellants. When released to the biosphere, energetics are xenobiotic contaminants which pose toxic hazards to ecosystems, humans, and other biota. Soils worldwide are contaminated by energetic materials from manufacturing operations; military conflict; military training activities at firing and impact ranges; and open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of obsolete munitions. Energetic materials undergo varying degrees of chemical and biochemical transformation depending on the compounds involved and environmental factors. This paper addresses the occurrence of energetic materials in soils including a discussion of their fates after contact with soil. Emphasis is placed on the explosives 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), and the propellant ingredients nitroglycerin (NG), nitroguanidine (NQ), nitrocellulose (NC), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), and perchlorate.

Simulated Rainfall-Driven Dissolution of TNT, Tritonal, Comp B and Octol Particles

Insensitive high explosives are being used in military munitions to counteract unintended detonations during storage and transportation. These formulations contain compounds such as 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), which are less sensitive to shock and heat than conventional explosives. We conducted a series of four tests on snow-covered ice utilizing 60-mm mortar cartridges filled with 358 g of PAX-21, a mixture of RDX, DNAN, and ammonium perchlorate. Rounds were detonated high- and low-order using a fuze simulator to initiate detonation. Blow-in-place (BIP) operations were conducted on fuzed rounds using an external donor charge or a shaped-charge initiator. Results indicate that 0.001 % of the original mass of RDX and DNAN were deposited during high-order detonations, but up to 28 % of the perchlorate remained. For the donor block BIPs, 1 % of the RDX and DNAN remained. Residues masses for these operations were significantly higher than for conventional munitions. Low-order detonations deposited 10–15 % of their original explosive filler in friable chunks up to 5.2 g in mass. Shaped-charge BIPs scattered 15 % of the filler and produced chunks up to 15 g. Ammonium perchlorate residue masses were extremely high because of the presence of large AP crystals, up to 400 μm in the recovered particles.

Characterization of PAX‐21 Insensitive Munition Detonation Residues

: New explosive compounds that are less sensitive to shock and high temperatures are being tested as replacements for TNT and RDX. Two of these explosives, DNAN (2,4-dinitroanisole) and NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5- one), have good detonation characteristics and are the main ingredients in a suite of insensitive munitions (IM) explosives that are being, or soon will be, fielded. Both compounds, however, are more soluble than either TNT or RDX; and research has shown that both have some human and environmental toxicity. Data on their fate is needed to determine if DNAN and NTO have the potential to reach groundwater and be transported off base, an outcome that could create future contamination problems on military training ranges and trigger regulatory action. In this study, we measured how quickly DNAN and NTO dissolve in IM formulations and how solutions of these IM explosives interact with different types of soils. Because both dissolution and solution soil interactions are determined by a suite of parameters, we are using a multifaceted approach to studying these processes. Given a mass of IM compounds scattered on the range, our work will help determine the dissolved IM masses, their subsequent transport and fate, and their likelihood of reaching groundwater.

Dissolution of NTO, DNAN and Insensitive Munitions Formulations and Their Fates in Soils

Composition B (Comp B) detonation residuals pose environmental concern to the U. S. Army because hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), a constituent, has contaminated groundwater near training ranges. To mimic their dissolution on surface soils, we dripped water at 0.51 mL/h onto individual Comp B particles (0.1−2.0 mg) collected from the detonation of 81-mm mortars. Analyses of the effluent indicate that the RDX and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in Comp B do not dissolve independently. Rather, the relatively slow dissolution of RDX controls dissolution of the particle as a whole by limiting the exposed area of TNT. Two dissolution models, a published steady-flow model and a drop-impingement model developed here, provide good agreement with the data using RDX parameters for time scaling. They predict dissolution times of 6−600 rainfall days for 0.01−100 mg Comp B particles exposed to 0.55 cm/h rainfall rate.
