Participatory Modeling in the AI Era

Coastal lagoons serve as highly productive ecosystems, delivering essential ecosystem services contributing to human welfare and well-being. Unfortunately, these intricate systems are particularly vulnerable to climatic and anthropogenic pressures, such as intensive agriculture and extensive urbanization. This paper presents a Digital Twin prototype of the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain, that utilizes environmental data collected from sensors and predicted data generated through machine learning algorithms. It covers the prototype's architecture, the corresponding API layer designed for interoperability with other systems, and its data visualization dashboard aimed at enhancing decision-making processes.

Integrating Machine Learning and Social Sensing in Smart City Digital Twin for Citizen Feedback

The environmental impact of computing is significant, distributed, and extensive. In this paper, we examine the extent to which this implies that computing, as an industry and as specific technologies, infrastructures, and practices, can be considered as ecocide. Eco-cide is a proposed crime of environmental damage. A significant movement is underway to register ecocide as the fifth law of the International Criminal Court. We examine the definition of ecocide proposed and evaluate computing across the criteria established. Our intention with this paper is not to provide definitive proof, one way or the other, but to raise the question of the extent to which we can consider, be accountable for, and take responsibility for the environmental harm we create as designers of computing technologies. We argue that the establishment of ecocide as an international crime will have significant effects for computing in how we assume and consume natural resources in the advancement of computing, and that a paradigm shift is needed to recognise and account for nature as an equal participant in computing’s future and development.

Computing as Ecocide

In the critical context of Mar Menor, the largest saltwater coastal lagoon in Europe, which is experiencing an ecological crisis, the paper describes the intelligent environmental infrastructure we are developing as part of the SMARTLAGOON project. In particular, we here present our strategy to collect both (i) real-time environmental data exploiting an intelligent infrastructure which comprises a smart buoy and AI models running on cameras and a mobile application, and (ii) socio-environmental data engaging citizen scientists (including environmental NGO members, children) and extracting people opinions and topic trends from social media via our social media sensing tool. The integration of such data will feed our Digital Twin.
