Electric Vehicles (EV) has recently been gaining increased worldwide interest since they result in far less climate pollution than their gas-powered counterparts. The main challenges in adoption of EV are insufficient charging stations, long charging time, high initial cost and limited range. Making India an all EV market by 2040 also ushers in incentives for the development of EVs like the Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) Scheme in 2015 to incentivize manufacturing of Eco-friendly vehicles including Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). This paper is focused on providing an overall picture of the modern Electric Vehicle scenario and areas for further growth.

Electric Vehicle Scenario in India: Roadmap,Challenges and Opportunities

This paper proposes a sensorless speed control technique for Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) drives by estimating speed from the hall sensor signals. Conventionally, the speed is measured using precision speed encoders. Since these encoders cost almost half of the entire drive system, there arises the need for a low cost speed estimation technique. This is proposed by measuring the frequency of the in-built-hall sensor signals. Here, a closed loop speed control of BLDC motor is proposed using a current controlled pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. Since BLDC motor is an electronically commutated machine, the commutation period is determined by a switching table that shows the hall signals' status. The entire system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the performance of the system was analyzed for different speed and torque references.

A low cost speed estimation technique for closed loop control of BLDC motor drive

The population of Electric Vehicle (EV) is tremendously increasing with the increase in fuel price and decrease in availability. As the number of EV increases, along with that the number of EV charging stations should also increase, which constitute a considerable charging impact on the grid from which the supply is taken. In this paper, in order to reduce this charging impact and its after effects, a topology for EV charging station is proposed which also promote the use of EVs. The proposed topology mainly consists of a charging station powered by the grid as well as the storage integrated solar PV system and a controller. The grid dependency of the charging station is reduced by using a renewable energy source (Solar PV) and for improving the system reliability a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is incorporated. The control technique helps to reduce the charging impact on the grid by controlling the charging current as per the system conditions. To make the EV Charging Station (EVCS) more customized, three different options (Quick, Green and Budget) for charging are given such that the customer is free to choose one among them according to his requirement. The cost of charging will vary according to the selected mode of charging. A smart Electric Vehicle charging station is designed and the charging current control in various grid conditions are tested and verified by u sing M ATLAB Simulink model and the obtained results are included.

Smart level 2 DC electric vehicle charging station with improved grid stability and battery backup

The sudden rise in gasoline products makes the transportation sector hectic. So the gasoline transportation is replaced by electrified transportation. The usage of renewable energy sources and energy storage technologies are of great demand in electrified transportation. Individual energy storage systems cannot compensate efficiently the demand for power for an electric vehicle. So a solar fed integrated system of lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor in an electric vehicle is nominated in this paper. Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is implemented by the charging and discharging of storage elements used. HESS enhances the whole performance and efficiency of electric powered vehicles. MATLAB and Proteus are the simulation platform used.

Solar Fed Hybrid Energy Storage System In An Electric Vehicle

The objective of this work is to create an economical drive system for a BLDC motor with lesser number of switches. In this paper, a new technique is introduced to control the speed of a Four switch Brushless DC (FSBLDC) Motor drive, by sensing the back-emf developed across the stator windings. Conventionally, the speed can be monitored by using speed encoders and are very expensive, also create noises while placing on the motor shaft. So a sensorless speed detection algorithm is developed by sensing the back-emf and the speed is calculated. Here the switching losses of the machine are abated by exciting the motor with a Four Switch Inverter with lesser number of switches. The system simulation and its results are included in this paper.
