Effect of foam processing parameters on bubble nucleation and growth dynamics in high-pressure foam injection molding

The high demand for plastic and polymeric materials which keeps rising every year makes them important industries, for which sustainability is a crucial aspect to be taken into account. Therefore, it becomes a requirement to makes it a clean and eco-friendly industry. Cellulose creates an excellent opportunity to minimize the effect of non-degradable materials by using it as a filler for either a synthesis matrix or a natural starch matrix. It is the primary substance in the walls of plant cells, helping plants to remain stiff and upright, and can be found in plant sources, agriculture waste, animals, and bacterial pellicle. In this review, we discussed the recent research development and studies in the field of biocomposites that focused on the techniques of extracting micro- and nanocellulose, treatment and modification of cellulose, classification, and applications of cellulose. In addition, this review paper looked inward on how the reinforcement of micro- and nanocellulose can yield a material with improved performance. This article featured the performances, limitations, and possible areas of improvement to fit into the broader range of engineering applications.

Micro- and Nanocellulose in Polymer Composite Materials: A Review.

This paper investigates the effects of cellulose content and processing conditions on the mechanical properties and foaming behavior of injection molded cellulose fiber reinforced polypropylene composite foams. Composite foams were injection molded using an advanced structural foam molding machine with N2 as a physical blowing agent. Foamed specimens were prepared at different injection speeds and void fractions. The mechanical properties and foam morphologies of the specimens were evaluated. The results suggested that the specific flexural modulus was increased and the specific flexural strength and Izod impact strength were maintained by foaming, and that the strength, modulus, and notched Izod impact strength increased with the increase of cellulose content. Additionally, the results suggested that the cell morphology of the composite foams was improved by the increase of void fraction and the addition of cellulose fiber.

This paper investigates the feasibility of injection-molded wood–fiber/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite foams that can replace injection-molded HDPE solids in industrial applications. The study applies injection foam molding technology using a physical blowing agent to a wood–fiber/HDPE composite, and examines the effects of the processing parameters on the dimensional and mechanical properties and cell density of the composite foams. In addition, the physical properties and cost of wood–fiber/HDPE composite foams are compared with those of solid HDPE. The experimental results show that wood–fiber/HDPE composite foams that have a 20% weight reduction have superior physical properties, such as density, dimensional properties (68% decrease of shrinkage and 91% decrease of warpage) and mechanical properties (28% increase of Young's modulus).
