Whistler excitation by electron beams in laboratory plasmas

We present the results of laboratory experiments in which the mechanisms of interaction of electron beams with whistler waves in a magnetoplasma are studied. Different mechanisms of whistler generation during the injection of a modulated electron beam in the plasma are studied, and the mechanism of conversion of the beam kinetic energy to radiation is demonstrated. The processes of whistler wave generation by the modulated beam at the ˇ Cerenkov and Doppler resonances are analyzed in detail. The excitation of whistler waves by means of a nonresonant mechanism of the transition radiation is studied.

Laboratory modeling of the interaction of electron beams with a magnetoplasma

Particle-in-cell code, EPOCH, is used for studying features of the wave component evident to propagate backwards from the front of the non-gyrotropic, relativistic beam of electrons injected in the Maxwellian, magnetised background plasma with decreasing density profile. According to recent findings presented in Tsiklauri (2011), Schmitz & Tsiklauri (2013) and Pechhacker & Tsiklauri (2012), in a 1.5-dimensional magnetised plasma system, the non-gyrotropic beam generates freely escaping electromagnetic radiation with properties similar to the Type-III solar radio bursts. In this study the backwards propagating wave component evident in the perpendicular components of the elecromagnetic field in such a system is presented for the first time. Background magnetic field strength in the system is varied in order to prove that the backwards propagating wave's frequency, prescribed by the whistler wave dispersion relation, is proportional to the specified magnetic field. Moreover, the identified whistlers are shown to be generated by the normal Doppler-shifted relativistic resonance. Large fraction of the energy of the perpendicular electromagnetic field components is found to be carried away by the whistler waves, while a small but sufficient fraction is going into L- and R- electromagnetic modes.

Whistler wave generation by non-gyrotropic, relativistic, electron beams

We present the results of experimental study of the mechanisms of interaction of nonstationary electron beams with magnetized plasma under conditions where typical durations τ of electon bunches satisfy the relation f

 p is the plasma frequency. It is demonstrated that the electromagnetic responses occurring in the magnetized plasma due to the intrusion of such beams are transported by whistler-mode waves. It is shown that these responses are of different nature. Namely, the transition radiation occurring in the vicinity of the point of injection of the pulsed beam into the plasma is a packet of quasi-longitudinal whistler-mode waves, while the electromagnetic response excited in a rarefied plasma is due to the Cerenkov resonance with the pulsed beam.

When injecting an electron beam with a significant pitch-angle in a magnetoplasma, one has to take care that the parallel velocity of the electrons measured in the plasma does not only depend on the acceleration potential between the anode and the cathode of the electron gun, but also on the amplitude of the ambient magnetic field. The latter can play an important role when the actual acceleration distance of electrons in the gun vicinity, determined partly by collective processes that lead to potential modification in the gun environment, is large enough. Consequently, the actual beam pitch-angle can be noticeably different from the orientation of the electron gun.
