Developing a meta model for the Bunge---Wand---Weber ontological constructs

The automated enactment of processes through the use of workflow management systems enables the outsouring of the control flow from application systems. By now a large number of systems, that follow different workflow paradigms, are available. This leads to the problem of selecting the appropriate workflow management system for a given situation. In this paper we outline the benefits of a meta model approach for the evaluation and comparison of different workflow management systems. After a general introduction on the topic of meta modeling the meta models of the workflow management systems WorkParty (Siemens Nixdorf) and FlowMark (IBM) are compared as an example. These product-specific meta models can be generalized to meta reference models, which helps to specify a workflow methodology. Exemplary, an organizational reference meta model is presented, which helps users in specifying their requirements for a workflow management system.

Evaluation of Workflow Management Systems - A Meta Model Approach

The present invention provides a meta model system of information resource dictionary system (IRDS) of an integrated computer aided software engineering (CASE) repository, which consistently stores and shares information generated by CASE tools of data flow diagram (DFD) and structure chart (SC) as well as supports software life cycle, and integrated supporting method for the integrated CASE repository meta model system. The repository is constructed to commonly stores, shares and manages information generated by CASE tools, realizing standardization and full automation of software development process methodology, and sharing of information between the tools. Integrated CASE meta model includes rules and constraints for information, which each tool must have, performs consistency detection for the type and meaning of information generated when the information is stored in the CASE repository, and is composed of meta model of repository which becomes a storage structure for all information generated by each tool. The meta model of repository determines which software life cycle and methodology do CASE tools based on the repository support. Accordingly, the information storage automatically integratedly manages information.

The analysis of workflow meta-models aims at a problem that frequently occurs during the selection of a workflow management system-evaluating the capabilities of a modeling method. In this paper, a meta-model approach for the evaluation of different workflow management systems is introduced. After a comparison of the meta-models of current workflow management systems, a procedure model for the evaluation process is specified. An organizational reference model is introduced, which helps users in specifying their requirements for a workflow management system. A comparison of scoring model and meta-model-based evaluation processes concludes this paper.

Evaluation of workflow management systems using meta models

Given the large number of system modelling techniques currently available, and the continual need to develop new and improved paradigms and approaches, it must be accepted that this diversity is inevitable, and perhaps even desirable. At the same time, it must be admitted, that the lack of integration and interoperability creates difficulties in effectively combining heterogeneous system modelling techniques and inhibits cost efficient transition of models from one CASE tool to another. This paper discusses the problems of incorporating heterogeneous system modelling techniques, including the extended entity-relationship approach and data flow diagrams, into a unifying conceptual framework. It also outlines the DROTIS project, which aims to develop a generic meta model and a set of interfaces and protocols to support the integration and interoperability of different system modelling techniques and CASE tools used for information systems development. The concept of a semantic space is introduced. This space allows the representation of different system modelling techniques as subsets of concepts in order to support their interoperability and federation.

The Role of Metamodels in Federating System Modelling Techniques

Laptops have been around since the 1980s, but the revolution in smaller handheld computing devices has given organisations many opportunities to develop and expand their enterprise information systems while posing a number of new challenges to designers and users. The use of handheld devices removes many of the traditional constraints associated with using corporate information systems through stationary computers. However, this newfound freedom may lead to major and unexpected changes in human behaviour and social interaction amongst handheld users and their clients. This paper reports on some implementation experience in the use of handheld computing devices in a major Australian healthcare provider. The case study shows that the social interaction between system users and between system users and their clients may be impacted significantly by the use of handheld devices. The case study further highlights the importance of understanding the social impact of using handheld devices in situations where the service delivered by the organisation depends on a personal relationship between system users and their clients.
